FHL2’s promoter contains CpG sites that typically become hypermethylated with age, a modification that has been used as a marker in DNA methylation–based age prediction models, like epigenetic clocks.[1]

Targeted methylation editing at age-associated CpGs, including FHL2, has been reported to induce genome-wide “bystander” methylation changes at other age-associated CpGs, supporting the idea that epigenetic ageing marks may be coordinated across the genome.
