Alfred North Whitehead
[edit]Starting at least as early as his books "Enquiry Regarding the Principles of Nature" and "Concept of Nature," and at last his "Process and Reality," Alfred North Whitehead developed the philosophical concept of extension, which he terms "abstractive extension," to make extension a fundamental element in his understanding of events and interrelationship of all things expressed by them in their concrescence (to use his term). I'll check to see whether it was a component of Einstein's theories as well, since Whitehead's work aims to bring philosophy into alignment with the fundamental changes in understanding brought about by Einstein. Each of the books mentioned brings new developments and changes in his use of the term. I'll try to work at adding a section here as I understand him better.
