There can also be a negative mortality rate - I read somewhere once that (I think New Zealand) funeral directors noticed an unexpected downward trend in deaths - and worked out that it was the an after-effect of WWI (the people who had not survived to add their deaths to the later period): we should now be seeing an equivalent for WWII.
