Ewlo

I've just edited the lead to state that 'Ewlo' is an alternative Welsh spelling of the village's name, rather than the sole Welsh spelling.

The standard name given by the Welsh Language Commisioner in both English and Welsh is 'Ewloe', with no other standard forms listed. Cadw call the castle 'Castell Ewloe' in both English and Welsh, and so far as I can tell road signs only use 'Ewloe'. Nevertheless, 'Ewlo' has been used by the BBC and Flintshire County Council. Overall, stating that 'Ewlo' is a variant Welsh spelling seems reasonable. A.D.Hope (talk) 13:15, 30 September 2025 (UTC)

@DankJae, I can see you've changed my wording. I think 'sometimes spelled Ewlo in Welsh' is easier to understand than 'sometimes Welsh: Ewlo'. You've also removed 'Ewlo' from the infobox, and I'm not sure why. A.D.Hope (talk) 09:20, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

"also spelled Ewlo in Welsh" still sounded like "also spelled with the Welsh name Ewlo", as a general alternative spelling that was Welsh rather than one alternative name used in Welsh, but yes a stretch. Prefer "sometimes" over "also". It also is very long, and keeping the standard "lang: word" still makes readers familiar that it is a non-English term rather than writing it as prose. Considering most non-English names are just formatted "lang:word" rather than "In lang it is word", thought the existing brevity to them can still be as understood concisely for a lead. Open to "Welsh: Ewloe or Ewlo" or "Ewlo (unofficial)" as an alternative but still keeping it short. I have used "sometimes" as a simple shorter approach on other articles that had unofficial Welsh names, many other editors just removed them if they were not recognised by the WLC list.

Removed it from the infobox as the infobox language parameter is formatted to only have one word/phrase, within one lang template, so it would tag "Ewloe, Ewlo" as one Welsh word/phrase not two (and transferring to any automatic source using Wiki), and considering Ewlo is as you say unofficial, decided to just omit it, leaving only the standardised name in both languages in the infobox. Ta for the response. I can see your reasoning in both cases, I just wasn't sure what it was when I opened the article this morning.

What about just 'alternative Welsh: Ewlo' for the lead? That adequately conveys that 'Ewlo' is an alternative spelling in Welsh, I'd say. For the infobox, can we use the 'local name' parameter for 'Ewlo'? It produces a smaller title below the main one, and I don't think it has to be used for only local names. Fine with "alternative" in the lead, and fine with just "Ewlo" in local name, though I would like a clarifier but that just can't be added for the same reasons. :( DankJae 20:02, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

After fiddling around with css, think I am able to force the infobox to represent both the Welsh names. But if it generates some hidden error, then go back to just "Ewlo" under local. DankJae 14:17, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
