esports.net article as a low quality, possibly LLM generated source
[edit]Several details in the article cites this article (https://www.esports.net/news/mobile-games/best-tetris-players/) from esports.net: namely Tolt being Canadian, a quote about his use of rolling, and as a reference for being the second best Tetris player in the world.
The article's content seems quite transparently generated from an LLM. It's language is vague, clunky, and contradictory. It clearly has little familiarity with the subject matter. It's photos are poorly cropped, stretched, and compressed. Nowhere does it specify "classic", or "NES" Tetris, and the article is tagged as relating to a mobile game. esports.net doesnt have any authority or expertise on Tetris, esports, or gaming, possessing little recognition as reliable. It's associated Twitter account has fewer than 5,000 followers.
It's slop, essentially.
Information about classic Tetris from mainstream sources is limited. Unlike regular sports, there aren't established journalism and sportswriting outlets to reference, because all secondary sources covering it are done by self-published amateurs, and primary source material are Discord server messages. While these aren't appropriate for Wikipedia, neither is this esports.net article. It's a low quality source with inaccurate information. If a coherent article cannot be written with the sources available, then it should be removed. Stolenshortsword (talk) 08:57, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Done, and thank you @Stolenshortsword and @3df for catching this and bringing it to my attention so quickly! Cheers from North Carolina 🙂 Johnson524 15:26, 9 November 2025 (UTC)

- @A.Cython: Thank you so much! There's no rush at all if you need some time before you start your review 🙂 Cheers! Johnson524 20:41, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
I enjoyed reading the biography of one of the players of Tetris, this brought back memories from childhood. I think the article can become a GA after some issues are addressed. Nothing major but still. A.Cython(talk) 01:12, 14 February 2026 (UTC)
- @A.Cython: I'm glad to hear that! The corrections should all be done now, no pushback on anything. If there's anything else you'd like addressed or changed please let me know! Johnson524 07:27, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

Structure
[edit]We want to avoid 1–2 sentence paragraphs, so
- Merge the last sentence in the lead with the previous paragraph
- I am not convinced that there is sufficient material for having a section "Personal life". Merge the info with the Tetris Career.

Prose
[edit]- He soon after began → "He began"
- of highest winning → "of the highest winning"
- of which being the → "is the"
- individual person to win → "individual to win"
- Gibson competed in and → "Gibson competed and"
- 2022 only list the → "2022 list only the" (move "only")
- Section "Notes", make sure every entry starts with a capital and ends with a full stop.
- add wikilink to YouTube one time in the lead and one more in the main body.
- remove acronym in the lead, i.e., CTM. If you do not use the acronym then do not define it.
- reach level 146: the first glitched → reach level 146, where the first glitched
- Tolt commented that victory can be achieved by outlasting an opponent because → remove "by outlasting an opponent" you have mentioned it above so it is redundant.

Issues
[edit]- Tolt is an American who lives in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. citation #1 provides the info about PA as the state where he is from but not citizenship. Consider rewriting, suggesting something like "Tolt lives in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania." Otherwise, include a citation that explicitly provides this info.
Final comments
[edit]Thank you for making the changes. Congratulations in bringing a Tetris-related article to GA family! Good job! A.Cython(talk) 15:50, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

... that Eric Tolt rose from being a casual player of Tetris to world champion in just four years? (Source)- ALT1 ... that Eric Tolt was the first person to achieve a "maxout" on a version of Tetris, a point in the game where the score becomes so high that it no longer registers correctly?

Johnson524, could you suggest a different hook? I am sorry but I don't find this hook interesting. There is a fact in the first paragraph "Tetris career" section that is very interesting. I would suggest it myself, but then I could not review it. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 19:31, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Coffeeandcrumbs: Ooo I'd love to hear what you had in mind! 😀 Even if you can't conduct a review, it's more important to me to have the hook be as polished as possible for the main page. Cheers! Johnson524 22:01, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- Johnson524, I will have to find another DYK to review for QPQ but here goes. I suggest the following hook:

- No opinion on ALT1, other than if we are to go with that, we need to make sure that the sourcing is extra strong per WP:DYKFIRST. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 08:46, 23 February 2026 (UTC)

@Johnson524: Long enough, new enough. QPQs are done and Earwig is clean. What makes Tetris Interest and Classic Tetris Monthly reliable sources, especially for a first claim?--Launchballer 17:02, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Launchballer: If you prefer it not be used, can ALT0 be struck and NES Tetris player smashes previous score records, captures first ever glitched colors by Shacknews be used for ALT1? Cheers! Johnson524 15:08, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- Shacknews is fine, and rereading the article Classic Tetris Monthly probably is as well. Tetris Interest seems like a blog and probably shouldn't be in the article.--Launchballer 11:09, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Launchballer: Either on an article or user talkpage I believe it's been discussed before that the source can still be usable (albeit it does not establish notability). While I'm fine with starting another discussion on this, since Tetris Interest is used across all six Tetris player GAs, this would be a pretty large change to implement. For the sake of time, would it be possible to move forward with the hook since it no longer uses TI as it's source? Cheers! Johnson524 21:37, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- I just searched for "Tetris Interest", and that showed me Talk:Alex Thach/GA1 and Talk:Jonas Neubauer, both of which says it's a fan blog. I don't think so.--Launchballer 14:17, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Tetris Interest is maintained by Even Phou aka Wingfryer, he's akin to a "social media manager" for CTWC, credit roll for the CTWC 2025 event lists him under "stats & data team". DK-ZERO (talk) 14:55, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- Would still count as WP:BLPSPS.--Launchballer 15:42, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Launchballer: I'd argue based off his job description the source should be treated more as a primary one than an SPS, which as I said earlier doesn't make it a great source, but not one where it's use should be barred altogether either. If at all possible though, since another source (Shacknews) was provided as a replacement for ALT1 and TetrisInterest is no longer used, could the review continue? I'm more than willing to discuss the source further if you'd like but I'm more concerned with getting this nom out of the backlog atp. Cheers! Johnson524 02:03, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

This is part of the review, which demands that articles be based on reliable souces, and this is still one person talking about another without any fact checking. I'm going to call for another reviewer to check I'm not being unreasonable here.--Launchballer 18:04, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
I'm not against the use of those sources as long as the article isn't wholly dependent on them, but they seem to be. With this long being past WP:DYKTIMEOUT and no one else approving this after all this time, this probably has to be let go unfortunately.
