Requested move 12 September 2017

[edit source]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Move. Clear consensus that this is the WP:COMMONNAME. Cúchullain t/c 14:06, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kingdom of EquestriaEquestria – Per WP:COMMONNAME, the article should be titled as Equestria as it appears more in the references and sources. In Google, "Kingdom of Equestria" only has 56,000 results, while "Equestria" has about 21,500,000 results. Eflyjason (talk) 09:21, 12 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Actually, Equestria is called a kingdom on the first episode, and mentioned as being a kingdom several times after that. I understand if we have to move it, but I'm just done arguing about it. -FLVSstudent417 (talk) 18:19, 12 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree with FLVSstudent417, though I understand renaming the page, I'm just tired of arguing about all of it, and they're right, Equestria is mentioned as being a kingdom a few times. --Navarre0107 (talk) 18:45, 12 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
No matter what the consensus is, as long as we stop debating this, that's fine with me RainbowIsBestPony (talk) 19:22, 12 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Gah, I have to admit that I haven't watched FIM for a long time. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 07:51, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
That's okay, everyone make mistake sometimes :) --RainbowIsBestPony (talk) 12:28, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that would be necessary. Although seeing how that disambiguation page mentions a real-life Equestria in South Africa, albeit one without an article of its own, maybe we can consider calling this Equestria (My Little Pony)? User:SubZeroSilver (talk) 18:41, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't see the need, a hatnote will be sufficient. Something like "This article is about a fictional universe. For the suburb, see Pretoria."ZXCVBNM (TALK) 04:16, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
To editor Zxcvbnm: Thank god, that saves us a whole other discussion. User:SubZeroSilver (talk) 15:33, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Expanding History

Comics versus Main Series

[edit source]

@Samantha Ireland:--Hey guys, within the page, should we specify more often, what's in the main series (the assuredly canon) and events that occurred in the comics (which, while it is still argued over, is possibly non-canon)? Should we have mentions from the comics at all?-- Navarre0107 (talk) 03:18, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • @Navarre0107:--I think it's been stated before that comics are not necessarily considered mainstream canon by those who write them (more specifically, the comics follow the show, but the show doesn't have to follow the comics), so I take it that the comics should be treated as irreverent to the article and it's details until proven to be show-canon, and would personally prefer the article to be show only as that is fully canon. That being said, the exact policy here is still a bit vauge.-- JadeEditor (talk)

Planet Equis?

[edit source]

Where is the planet referred to as Equis? All soruces I'm aware of refer to the planet as Earth, such as Nightmare Rarity where Luna says she has to get back to Earth. The statement has no citation, so does anyone know? --SupermanFan97 (talk) 16:06, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • There seems to be no confirmation of the planet's name through the show proper. As such, I have removed it as a reference --JadeEditor (talk)

Comic Lore questions

[edit source]

There seems to be a lot of references to the My Little Pony comics within this article. However, the comics have been said to be dubiously canon at best, so should we really include indications from there? --JadeEditor (talk)

@JadeEditor:, I’ve asked this question previously on this talk page, without too many responses, I think we should look furtherly into limiting such references, seeing as though they are often seen, both by the fans and creators, to be of varying canonicity at best - Navarre0107 (talk) 03:03, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • @Navarre0107: Admittedly I didn't see your comment until I made mine. But I do agree with you on the canoncity I will probably start removing comic references from the article or at least state that some parts of it come from the comics that are dubious at best. Hopefully that passes without too many objections. - JadeEditor (talk)

Citation Format

[edit source]

Would anyone be so kind to help me reformat the citations that only list the episode name or just the url? This isn’t inline with Wiki’s guidelines, just want to make sure the page is as good as can be :) Thanks! -Navarre0107 (talk) 03:11, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I took a crack at it and have fixed most of them. It looks like some the episode titles weren't even correct, grrr...BuySomeApples (talk) 23:09, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ponish language

[edit source]

The introduction reads: "Instead of English, it is mentioned that they call their language "Ponish"; however, due to the fact that written English is seen at several times during the series, it is generally understood that this is English under a different name" Is this actually supported? I always assumed that the written words were "translated" for the audience, rather than the ponies literally speaking English under a different name. Unless there's a reliable source, I'm gonna remove the second half of that sentence for speculation.BuySomeApples (talk) 02:56, 10 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

[edit source]

I get the sense this is an error, since I'm pretty sure the Crystal Empire in the context of my little pony is not "the second full-length album by the German power metal band Freedom Call". Here's hoping I've submitted this correctly! (Probably haven't, I don't much use this talk page affair.) I've not bothered to check all the references, but the link under "Crystal Guard" or whatnot seems to do it.

Yes. That link was obviosly wrong, so I removed it. Gial Ackbar (talk) 07:31, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Drastic changes?

[edit source]

This article might need drastic changes if it's ever going to be up to standards. There is a ton of information about the history and lore of Equestria that probably shouldn't be on here. Hesitant to remove it but it looks necessary...BuySomeApples (talk) 23:25, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed cuts

[edit source]

The Equestria article is currently way too long (46,000+ characters) meanwhile the Middle-earth article is only 18,000+ characters. I think if we're trimming down the Equestria article, we should compare it to similar articles about universes which have a lot of lore and worldbuilding (like LoTR). Notably the "Geography" and "History" sections of Middle-earth are way shorter, and there isn't a "Culture" section. The "Government" section can also be folded into the "Geography" and "Inhabitants" sections. Unless someone else has a better idea, I'll start cutting back those sections considerably. Much of the "History" section is already discussed as the plot of MLP:FiM and the movies so it isn't really needed here. If necessary we can always include links to other articles and sections. BuySomeApples (talk) 08:15, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

A problem with this article is that it is way too in-universe. I've written out-of-universe stuff in in my sandbox on this article, so feel free to incorporate any of that (just provide attribution). At the time I'm writing this, the article's "readable prose size" is 6820 words (by my count, our second-longest MLP article after My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fandom and even longer than the main MLP:FIM article). I don't really expect it to be shorter than Middle-earth since there are tributary (can't think of the word right now so just using river vocab) articles (lots of "main article" hatnotes). Then again, we can provide a lot less information about Equestria than Middle-earth since there's not as much coverage. This article also doesn't mention G5. While it hasn't been released yet, I think a sentence or paragraph about it could be useful. Pamzeis (talk) 05:51, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
This is really great stuff! The development section is especially helpful as that's a pretty glaring omission on the page right now. I'll definitely make sure to attribute the text to you when I add it to the page. I just finished chopping down and re-writing the "History" and "Technology and Magic" sections so I'm probably gonna take a break until tomorrow. BuySomeApples (talk) 08:18, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Pamzeis: I added most of the content from your sandbox to the page, its helped to build it out a lot. I made some edits to integrate it into the test, and removed some older, worse content. I also cleaned up some of the messy infobox sprawl so it looks much nicer now. There's so much work to be done but I'm starting to see real improvement. BuySomeApples (talk) 08:46, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
"meanwhile the Middle-earth article is only 18,000+ characters" This is hardly surprising. Middle-earth is an overview article. Much of the information on the associated world is covered in Tolkien's legendarium, Geography of Middle-earth, Tolkien's maps, Cosmology of Tolkien's legendarium, History of Arda, Middle-earth peoples, Languages constructed by J. R. R. Tolkien, and a few other spin-off articles.Dimadick (talk) 14:14, 9 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's a good point @Dimadick: but Equestria is also an overview article it just doesn't have as many supporting pages. The problem is that LoTR has way WAY more secondary and tertiary sources than MLP. These are the books and articles that support detailed geographic and linguistic analyses of Middle-earth. There are literal academic journals just about Tolkien's work. We don't have anything near that level of scholarship for MLP unfortunately. This means that we can't properly explore Equestria on the scale that Middle-earth is. That's why so much of the Equestria article was (and still is) original research or primary sources (the show and comics). If this article is ever gonna get cleaned up and un-tagged (let alone reach GA status) we're gonna have to remove the cruft even if its painful. BuySomeApples (talk) 04:45, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

There are some comics form IDW named "FIENDship is Magic" about the backstories of the villains of the show. Elsewere, Friendshpi sould be coorrect. Gial Ackbar (talk) 07:30, 4 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Timberwolves and other species

[edit source]

Can the Timberwolves and other species, such as the Parasprites be on this page? These creatures also live there.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:18D:4700:72A0:F550:707E:33B8:EE51 (talk) 10:16, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't think that would be an improvement. The article is already way too detailed. It should only the most importance facts, not every detail about floa and fauna. More details should only be in the MLP Fandom Wikis. Gial Ackbar (talk) 13:40, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I think this isn’t notable

[edit source]

I could be wrong, though. ~2026-31861 (talk) 13:36, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

It absolutely passes WP:GNG. There's a lot of academic analyses on Google Scholar published in peer-reviewed journals that should definitely be added to the article in an Analysis section. GM 16:11, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Split Ponies

[edit source]

Are Ponies good candidate to be spinned-off into their own Pony (My Little Pony) fictional race/species article, like other fantasy/science fiction races/species? Knarcurama (talk) 08:33, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Knarcurama: I think that subject may be notable enough, but I'll have to do some more research on that. As long as there have been academic analysis that doesn't just consist of an in-universe summary about the species, it should be eligible for its own article. GM 19:52, 13 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
After doing some research, I've found at least three sources that offer real-world critical perspectives on ponies as depicted in MLP.
  • Hobbs, Priscilla (April 23, 2015). "Everypony Has a Story: Revisions of Greco-Roman Mythology in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". In Berti, Irene; Carlà-Uhink, Filippo (eds.). Ancient Magic and the Supernatural in the Modern Visual and Performing Arts. Bloomsbury Publishing. pp. 197–209. ISBN 9781472532213.

"Equestria's four princesses are alicorns, the upper-class elite who have components of three ancestral groups: the unicorns, Pegasus ponies and earth ponies. Three of the alicorns are linked to traditional images of planetary gods: Luna and Celestia appear to represent the moon and the sun, respectively; Cadance could correspond to Venus. There are different types of alicorns. For example, Flurry Heart, the alicorn foal and daughter of Princess Cadance and Shining Armor, is born an alicorn rather than transforming from a pony into one (by contrast, Twilight earned her alicornhood). [...] The original homeland of the three races (Pegasi, unicorns and earth ponies) is in the grip of a blizzard... The producers bring complexity to these tribe formations: the lower-class Earth ponies and unicorns connote medieval-style people; the upper-class unicorns signify medieval-style nobility; the upper-class Earth ponies suggest early modern people; and the Pegasi connote Greco-Romans [...] In the specific case of MLP: Friendship is Magic, there is a preponderance of equine species. There are other species, but the name Equestria implicitly elevates horses as a 'race' as normative."

  • Davis, Alesha (October 18, 2023). "Animation with Alesha: Pride and Pony Prejudice in 'My Little Pony'". The Post.

"These episodes set ponies at the apex of the social order, and later episodes continue this pattern as ponies begin crusading, thanks to the introduction of the Cutie Map. How other creatures are seen in comparison to ponies only worsens as the seasons go on." "The ponies are essentially colonizers in this episode, settling on lands they have no right to claim while pushing the natives out. They even call themselves 'settler ponies.'" "The ponies' refusal to acknowledge Spike's status as a dragon and dismissal of other dragons' tastes looks like a particular brand of prejudice I have seen before. Sometimes, when someone is the sole minority in a white space, they are treated as a separate entity from the rest of their race." "However, this episode shows that the ponies can be openly hateful toward others when they don't understand them, and it is a good point to refer back to. The ponies absolutely do not learn their lesson about judging other people's way of life."

  • Kryza, Andy (October 12, 2021). "How the 'My Little Pony' Reboot Fights Racism With Gobs of Glitter". Fatherly. BDG Media. Retrieved January 13, 2026.

"In this update, blue-collar Earth ponies (that is, plain old anthropomorphic horses), rustic unicorns, and elitist pegasi have all lost their magic and segregated themselves to their own parts of Equestria. The central villain is an industrialist Earth pony preying on institutionalized fears by selling anti-unicorn and pegasus defense gizmos to a homogenous city whose citizens have never laid eyes on a different breed of pony. When unicorn Izzy — voiced chipperly by Kimiko Glenn — shows up in the Earth Pony town of Maretime Bay, all hell breaks loose. That leads Sunny — whose late father (Michael McKean) was something of a pony-rights scholar — and new pal Izzy on a quest for a magical crystal that takes them to the Greek mythology-inspired land of the pegasi in a quest to unite ponydom. Along the way, the heroes confront their own latent, learned prejudices (unicorns are violent hicks, Earth ponies are smelly and lazy, pegasi are power-hungry zionists... sound familiar?)."

  • There's more critical analysis in the sources listed in the article for Zecora that also analyze pony races, so I believe this subject indeed passes WP:GNG. GM 05:02, 14 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

    Matriarchy?

    [edit source]

Why does the article say that Equestria is a matriarchy? A matriarchy implies the superiority of women over men, which was not shown in the series. Yes, the country is ruled by two sisters, but that's not enough to consider it a matriarchy. A matriarchy necessarily implies the restrictions on men's rights, for example, a man does not own property, cannot hold high-ranking positions, inheritance and/or power is passed down through the female line, a woman is traditionally the head of the family, when hiring, preference is given to women, men receive lower salaries for the same work, etc. In a matriarchy, at least one of these things (or any other men discrimination) is always present. And none of this was shown in the series. In Equestria are many stallions in high positions, and we don't know anything about the rules of property ownership and inheritance, the traditional family structure and the working environment in the country. Any other discrimination against males also not was shown in the series. Also, if a country has a matriarchy, there is bound to be discrimination against men in verbal statements (e.g., "men can't do it" or "don't argue with a woman"). Throughout the series, males were never gender discriminated in verbal statements. And more, the series showed cases where a mare changed her last name after getting married (for example, Spoiled Rich name was Spoiled Milk before she married Filthy Rich, and Mrs. Cake name was Chiffon Swirl before she married Mr. Cake), but it did not show the opposite cases. As for the rule of the country, it seems to be passed down from the ruler to his student (as was the case with Celestia and Twilight), and among the previous students of Celestia were both mares and stallions (Sunset and Sunburst). In general, the series does not focus on gender issues in Equestria. ~2026-69477-4 (talk) 14:01, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I completly agreee, there isn’t obvious female hemogeny or supremicy either. Ajron Bach (talk) 07:19, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
