I have seen in several places claims that Stutsman was a friend to Abraham Lincoln, or knew his family, or that Lincoln advanced his career. Stutsman's birthplace in Indiana was not close to Lincoln's home 1826-30, and while his family later ended up in Coles County, Illinois along with Lincoln's father, Lincoln had left home by then. It is conceivable that Lincoln knew Stutsman through his career in the Illinois courts in the late 1840s and early 1850s, or at least knew of him - he must have been the subject of some talk, with his deformity. On the other hand, Stutsman did not get a federal job until 1866, after Lincoln's death. Brianyoumans (talk) 19:09, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
