[edit]Engenheiro is the portuguese term for engineer. Engenharia is the portuguese term for engineering. Engenho has double meaning. It can be any gadget, machine, contraption, that does something usually in a mechanical way. However, the broadest sense and more lyric meaning expresses the craft, the skill of engineering. Engenho: In Brazil throughout the Colonial era, the Empire, and well into the Twentieth Century, 'engenho' was generally a short form of 'engenho de açucar' a sugar mill. Brazilian natives
[edit]The Brazilian natives were decimated by a variety of means, not just diseases, including mass slaughter, dispersal to the interior, enslavement, and intermarrying. We don't want to get into that messy bit of history here. If we're going to mention slavery, we need to cover it everywhere where sugarcane and mills weer established, including Africa and Caribbean colonies.
