If the derivation of Aemilius/Aemilia from Latin aemulus is not questioned, please bring references that show this. From my references I see that the Latin word aemulus is of uncertain origin, as is the Latin word imitari with which it is connected. Even if the names are derived from aemulus, the shades of meaning (some probably lost to history) of an old Latin word with an unclear etymology have to be considered. Saying that Aemilius/Aemilia means "rival" needs to be backed up by citations. "Rival" was one of the meanings of aemulus. A is putting the smack down (talk) 17:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Emel (Turkish) removed

Emel means "wish" or "desire", in Turkish, which is originally from Arabic. It has nothing to do with "Emily", aside from phonetic similarity.140.180.244.18 (talk) 04:10, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

• Comment! I have two things to say:

1. I can tell the whole story as to why we are in this situation. It started with a technical request filed by @Clarityfiend at RMTR, that Emily be moved to Emily (disambiguation). It was accepted by @Cptabhiiriya (permalink, not sure how to highlight the specific text, so you'll just have to find it). After this requested was completed, the redirect was retargeted to Emily (given name). Primary topic grabs are never uncontroversial, so I must ask: Cptabhiiriya, why did you accept this technical request?
2. I slightly agree with Crouch, Swale's argument that the given name has long-term significance, but also have the same thoughts about undoing this move since it resulted in this.
