"He discovered a total of 56 new dinosaur species during the Bone Wars compared to Marsh's 80", "he discovered and described over 1,000 species of fossil vertebrates". The information of over 1000 species originated from the obituary in Geological Magazine (here) - many of those species later were rejected by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. Yes, 56 new dinosaur species specified in Colbert, 1984. But in the next sentence, the author writes: "It should be said that not all these species have stood the test of time". I think the more accurate number, about 15 dinosaur species, provided by Paul Brinkman in "The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush", page 9: "Marsh was the clear winner in the race for Jurassic dinosaurs, but his victory made him the object of Cope’s envy. Although Cope enjoyed a fair number of successes, his Yale rival took the lion’s share of the finest fossils. Marsh’s final tally of specimens is not precisely known, but his several Jurassic localities in Colorado and Wyoming yielded not less than 1,115 crates of (mostly) dinosaur bones. From that rich harvest, he described twenty-one new genera and forty-one new species.
