expand

[edit]

Could we get some actual content here. This is actually below a stub, it's just a directory listing, and Wikipedia is not a directory. If there is something to say about this company, say it already. Beeblbrox (talk) 19:39, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I didn't write the article. I never heard of it until now. I am an admin reviewing CSDs and I saw this. While you were 100% correct to label the article as an A1, I decided to try to expand it. A google news search (this) shows me 138 hits, which is usually significant, and makes me very hesitate to delete. However most of the articles are mainly concerned about its stock prices so it is hard to get a information that an encyclopedia wants (what they do, how large are they (in people not dollars), history etc) stuff which the business sections isn't really concerned about. My gut says that there is information out there to be found, and that this is a notable company; it just might take some time to expand it. Jon513 (talk) 19:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's come quite a ways in just the few minutes since I made that remark. The initial creation still puzzles me, why would someone create an article, put it in a category, but not provide one word of content? I guess I'll just have to accept that there are things we are not meant to understand... Beeblbrox (talk) 20:08, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
He did expand it diff it just took 15 minutes. Jon513 (talk) 20:13, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The information in the EZCORP article is out of date, having last been updated in 2008. My intent is to add updated information and correct errors

Change in company's interest in Albemarle & Bond

[edit]

AGeasy (talk) 17:58, 3 July 2014 (UTC)During the 2nd quarter of EZCORP's FY14, the company adjusted their investment in Albemarle & Bond down to zero, resulting in a $6 million after-tax write off, per 4/29/14 press release. I am updating the article to reflect such.Reply

AGeasy (talk) 19:26, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[1]Management changes effective 7/18/14Reply

66.45.78.164 (talk) 19:22, 22 July 2014 (UTC)On 7/18/14, MS Pawn Limited Partnership, which owns 100% of EZCORP's outstanding Class B Voting Common Stock, announced certain changes to our management and Board of Directors. As a result, Paul Rothamel and Board members William Love and Joseph Beal are no longer with the company. The voting stockholder also appointed Lachlan P. Given as Chairman of the Board. On 7/21, Mark Kuchenrither accepted the position of Interim CEO. Editing the info in the right panel to reflect these changes. Will update article soon.Reply

Major clean up

[edit]

This article was bloated and mostly unsourced. There was an over reliance on self published sources such as the company website and press releases. I've removed uncited content and am rebuilding the article using reliable secondary sources. Comments and assistance is welcomed.--KeithbobTalk 00:26, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Providing Updates & Disclosing COI

[edit]

Hello, I work with EZCORP in corporate communications and have a conflict of interest, so I am not editing the article directly. I would like to request updates to the EZCORP article because several sections are outdated and appear to rely on information that is more than 10 years old. These include leadership, history, store count, geographic footprint, acquisitions, brand references, ownership structure, and recent company developments. The proposed updates are intended to improve accuracy, neutrality, and sourcing. I have included the approved draft and supporting citations below for independent editors to review.

If easier for me to do separate Talk posts with these sections and corresponding citations, I am happy to do so. Thank you editors for reviewing the updates.

EZCORP, Inc. is an American pawn shop operator headquartered in Austin, Texas. Through its subsidiaries, the company provides pawn lending services and sells pre-owned merchandise through stores in the United States and Latin America. Its Class A non-voting common stock trades on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol EZPW. As of September 30, 2025, EZCORP operated 1,360 locations, including 545 in the United States, 622 in Mexico and 193 across Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Following acquisitions completed in January 2026, the company reported operating approximately 1,500 pawn stores across 16 countries. [1][15]

EZCORP has been described as the second-largest pawn store operator in the United States by store count. [22]

EZCORP's business is centered on nonrecourse pawn loans secured by tangible personal property. The company also generates revenue from the sale of merchandise acquired through forfeited pawn collateral or purchased directly from customers. Common collateral categories include jewelry, consumer electronics, tools, sporting goods and musical instruments. [1]

History

[edit]

EZCORP was founded in 1989 and expanded its pawn operations during the 1990s. By the mid-1990s, the company operated stores across multiple U.S. states and continued to grow through both new store openings and acquisitions. [1]

During the early 2000s, EZCORP diversified beyond traditional pawn operations into other consumer financial services, including payday loans, auto title loans, installment loans and lines of credit. In July 2015, the company announced that it would close its U.S. Financial Services business and refocus on pawn operations. [2]

EZCORP expanded in Latin America through a combination of acquisitions and new store openings. In 2021, the company acquired 128 pawn stores in Mexico operating under the name Cash Apoyo Efectivo, which the company described at the time as the largest acquisition in its history by store count. [4]

In December 2022, EZCORP acquired a Las Vegas-based luxury pawnbroking business operating as Max Pawn, expanding its exposure to higher-value resale categories such as jewelry, handbags, watches and other luxury goods. [5]

In fiscal 2025, EZCORP opened 40 new stores and acquired 52 stores. The company also completed a private offering of $300 million of senior notes due 2032 in March 2025. [1][6]

In January 2026, EZCORP announced that it had acquired a controlling interest in Founders One, LLC. Through its Simple Management Group subsidiary, Founders One operated 105 pawn stores in the United States and 11 additional countries, predominantly under the names La Familia Pawn and Jewelry and CashWiz. EZCORP also announced the acquisition of 12 Texas pawn stores as part of the same release. [7][23]

Operations

[edit]

EZCORP operates pawn stores that provide short-term, asset-backed loans. Pawn loans are nonrecourse, meaning that a customer has no obligation beyond the pledged collateral. If a loan is not repaid, the collateral is forfeited and may be sold through the company's retail channels. [1]

As of September 30, 2025, the company's U.S. pawn segment included 545 locations operating primarily under the EZPAWN and Value Pawn & Jewelry names, along with other branded U.S. pawn operations. More than 62% of the company's U.S. pawn stores were located in Texas and Florida. Its Latin America operations included 622 stores in Mexico and 193 stores across Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Following the January 2026 Founders One and Texas-store acquisitions, EZCORP reported operating 1,500 pawn stores across 16 countries. [1][15]

The company reported fiscal 2025 revenue of approximately $1.288 billion, compared with approximately $1.182 billion in fiscal 2024. Pawn loans outstanding were approximately $307.5 million as of September 30, 2025. Pawn service charges represented approximately 37% of total revenue and 64% of gross profit in fiscal 2025. [1]

Ownership and Investments

[edit]

EZCORP has a dual-class share structure. Its publicly traded Class A common stock does not have voting rights, while the company's Class B voting common stock is held by one stockholder. According to the company's 2025 Form 10-K, Philip E. Cohen controls the company through MS Pawn Corporation and MS Pawn Limited Partnership, and serves as Executive Chairman. [1]

In addition to its core pawn operations, EZCORP holds an equity interest in Cash Converters International Limited. As of September 30, 2025, EZCORP owned approximately 43.7% of Cash Converters, which operated 659 stores across 15 countries. [1]

EZCORP also held an ownership interest in Rich Data Co., a provider of artificial intelligence-based credit assessment and risk analytics solutions, as disclosed in the company's FY2025 Annual Report. [20]

Leadership

[edit]

As of June 2026, EZCORP's executive leadership team includes: Lachlan P. Given, Chief Executive Officer; Timothy Jugmans, Chief Financial Officer; and Philip E. Cohen, Executive Chairman of the Board. Leadership information is published on the company's investor relations website. [21]

Brands

[edit]

EZCORP operates multiple consumer-facing brands in the pawn lending and secondhand retail market.

EZPAWN is one of EZCORP's principal U.S. pawn brands. Its website describes services including pawn loans, buying and selling merchandise, layaway, and jewelry-related services. [1][8][16][24]

Value Pawn & Jewelry is another EZCORP U.S. brand that primarily operates in Florida and Georgia. Its website describes services for customers seeking to pawn, sell or shop for pre-owned merchandise. [1][9][17][24]

USA Pawn & Jewelry became part of EZCORP in 2015, when the company acquired 13 USA Pawn & Jewelry stores in Arizona and Oregon. The brand currently operates in Arizona, Oregon, Mississippi and Texas and provides pawn, shopping and selling services, including jewelry, collectibles and electronics. [3][10][18]

Max Pawn is a luxury pawn and resale brand acquired by EZCORP in 2022. The brand operates in Nevada and Florida and specializes in authenticated pre-owned luxury merchandise including handbags, jewelry, watches and related goods. [5][11][19]

Digital Services and Customer Programs

[edit]

EZCORP has expanded digital services intended to support its store-based pawn operations. Its EZ+ platform allows customers to manage pawn transactions, layaways and loyalty rewards online. The company's EZ+ Rewards program had approximately 6.9 million global members as of fiscal 2025. [1]

Industry Context

[edit]

Pawn stores operate within the broader alternative financial services and secondhand retail sectors. Media coverage in 2025 described pawn shops as a source of discounted goods and short-term liquidity for some consumers, including during the back-to-school shopping season. [12]

Segments of the pawn and resale industry have also received media attention for luxury goods and collectibles. Max Pawn has been included in media coverage of Las Vegas pawn shops and luxury resale. [13][14]
