A lot of reporting currently on Spielberg being #22 - but did he actually win a Tony for A Strange Loop? Is this verifiable outside of the Hollywood press reporting the original Hollywood Reporter article? eeveeman (talk) 00:34, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've researched this a bit and could not find independent verification prior to 2/1/2026 of him being a Tony Winner.
He doesn't have a tony for Strange Loop and I can't find a source crediting him as having a tony before tonight's grammy announcement.
Note: Seeing the edit warring I've fully protected this page for 24 hours. Editors are welcome to make their case on talk. I may extend this protection if necessary. BusterD (talk) 01:41, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to Variety, Tony Awards representatives confirmed that Spielberg did receive a Tony statuette as a producer for A Strange Loop, under their et al designation, despite it not being listed on the Tony Awards website
This is the only real confirmation I was able to locate as well, it just feels like they're trying to credit him with a Tony to make him an EGOT winner after the Grammy win. Can't find a single source of him winning a Tony prior to 2/1/2026 and you would think him being on the cusp of the EGOT would have been noticed. ~2026-71326-9 (talk) 02:15, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It may be that no one had noticed, not to mention I wouldn't say being 2 awards out (at least as far we knew) is on the cusp of a EGOT. But I would say if Variety has confirmed with the Tony's we should label him as an EGOT winner. Pikachubob3 (talk) 07:38, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I mean if he was listed under et al, which Variety and the Tonys confirmed, it's not surprising that there aren't any sources before this moment as it would be almost impossible to know. I don't really see the argue against not giving him the Tony if the Tonys themselves confirmed he has one. Cubes117 (talk) 09:27, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
More my own ignorance but what does 'et al' actually mean in this context? On the Tony's 2022 nomination page there is no 'et al' denomination. Separately that Variety has confirmed with the Tony Awards I think its reasonable to re-instate the #22 designation on the page with the Variety article as source, I don't oppose it, I just don't understand it! eeveeman (talk) 09:41, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not really sure what's normal for broadway I guess but it does seem like it's a huge list of producers. My only real guess is at the Tony's they likely could not display all producers names and production companies so just listed the lead producers and then a catch all "et al" for all the other producers involved that would also receive awards for the win? I really couldn't say with certainty but I guess it makes sense to the Tony's Cubes117 (talk) 09:51, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's the part that is confusing - via Variety, a Tony representative has "confirmed" he has it, but the IBDB doesn't list him winning one. If you have to confirm privately that he's won one, it doesn't really assist in verification - but does the Variety article constitute enough on its own? eeveeman (talk) 10:54, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just feel like it is much more likely that Spielberg got lost in the "et al" of it all by the Tony's making him (and others) not appear on the database, potentially due to the enormous amount of producers that the project had. Surely that is a much more likely scenario than the one where either a journalist at a large publication puts their reputation on the line with a fake quote from Tony representatives, or for some reason that makes even less sense, the Tonys and Variety are scheming to get Spielberg an award for a 4 year old play so he can get some title. Cubes117 (talk) 11:25, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just how many producers did A Strange Loop have to be the reason that *5* people on this page are listed as EGOT winners? FOARP (talk) 15:08, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Was going to add Spielberg because he's reported as an EGOT winner in sources typically considered reliable (e.g., The Guardian). I'm still inclined to say he should be listed here unless something actually says he didn't win the Tony. The mere fact that he wasn't listed on an archived version of the Tony awards page isn't a total rebuttal here. FOARP (talk) 13:51, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
My issue with him being proclaimed a Tony winner is that there are no actual online sources for a Tony win prior to 2/1/26, and you think it would have been mentioned at some point. He wasnt added to the IBDB page for Strange Loop until two years after it's win. The only source on him winning a Tony is in the Variety Article and every other source saying he's a Tony winner loops back to said article. But at this point, the press have decided he won a Tony, and Variety states a Tony Awards Representative says he won it and they just never added him on the website.
I'm just saying it would be nice to find an online source dated from before 2/1/26 on the Tony win, or an update to the Tony website, which still doesn't reflect his status of winning a Tony. ~2026-71326-9 (talk) 23:25, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Two of these sources are dated 2/1/2026 when he won the grammy. The second source for ibdb did not have him listed as a produced until well after it had already won the Tony, he was updated to the page in 2024.
The closes thing to confirmation I've seen is the Variety article claims to have reached out to a Tony Awards Representative and were advised Spielberg received a statuette as part of the production’s credited producer group, listed under the “et al” designation. The timing just feels off as if he was EGOT eligible, it feels like he would have been listed on various sources prior to 2/1/2026 as only needing the Grammy, but I have no located any source indicating the tony win prior to 2/1/26. ~2026-71326-9 (talk) 02:13, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
my own opinion is would say listed as a EGOT because I am not sure why everyone would be saying is one he not one. I think we would at least one news site saying no he's not, but just my opinion. BWMESQ (talk) 03:43, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I was the first person to remove his win, but seeing a representative from the Tony Awards confirm it is enough for me (as annoying as it is for the future). I would say add him back. Sbb618 (talk) 05:14, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment: I don't believe this call is up to wikipedians. We sometimes think that as the world's best online encyclopedia, we should perform the reasonable calculation (that we get to decide who is and who is not). But Wikipedia requires reliable secondary sources. IMHO we should be looking for reliable secondary coverage of how Spielberg is now a EGOT qualifier, not whether he has a statuette on his mantle. The subject is a creator of so many and such recognized works, I can't imagine this derivative accomplishment is in any way important to him. If Variety (which is and has always been about Variety) posts an article stating Spielberg is an EGOT, that would count as one source. Variety is in the business of making fetch happen. I'd suggest we'd need more than that. BusterD (talk) 11:11, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's now reported in The Guardian, which is typically considered a reasonably high-quality news media source. I'd expect, if Spielberg really hadn't won the Tony, some kind of denial of this from the Tony awards operators or Spielberg himself. Absent actual evidence that Spielberg wasn't one of the "et. al" co-winners, he should be listed as an EGOT winner. FOARP (talk) 13:56, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree, based on available reporting across the board he has all four - although I'm curious why you've stuck him in the middle after Scott Rudin and not at the end, as its presumably listed based on date of achieving the fourth award. eeveeman (talk) 14:21, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, yeah, A Strange Loop has *A LOT* of people listed as producers etc. of it (including - 4? - previous EGOT winners?) so I can understand reluctance to list Spielberg as a winner around here just because he was in the "et al" pile with apparently a large number of other people. FOARP (talk) 15:06, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
No worries, thanks for writing and moving. Lots of discussion elsewhere on the merits of the various awards and winning for being a producer but its not really for us to debate the minutiae - seems he definitely has one of each, so an EGOT winner he is! eeveeman (talk) 15:29, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Steven Spielberg was previously listed as not having received a Tony. As we now know, he had apparently had actually received a Tony, but was not listed as having done so by name but instead included as "et al" in a long list of backers for A Strange Loop, nor apparently was the fact that he had won it published anywhere until years after the awards.
With this in mind:
Are we sure the other people listed as missing a Tony do actually not have a Tony, or could they also be included as "et al" on Strange Loop or a similar show?
Strange Loop appears to have had a large number of celebrity backers, nor is it likely to be the last show like that. When did this issue begin?
Our list of people missing EGOT awards appears to have been sourced negatively - that is to say we are saying that as far as we can determine using the sources available, these people are not listed anywhere. The last positive source (i.e., expressly stating that these people lacked awards) was the LA Times (blog?) article from 2008. Whilst other sources exist I have circular-citation concerns about them (e.g., this article also omitted Spielberg, which we know now not to have been true).
Negative sourcing can only really be justified as not being original research if we are absolutely sure that this is a 2+2=4 and sky-is-blue situation where there can only be one conclusion from them not being listed, but Spielberg's award appears to undermine this since it indicates that for at least one award, not everyone who gets it is listed.
Do any of the other awards have "et al" listings or similar? Or is this only seen for Tonys?
I'm not knowledgeable enough about the above to be sure but it looks like we need to at least add a rider that these are people not listed as winners but may be included as "et al.", and maybe reconsider the "three awards" lists entirely. FOARP (talk) 09:32, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
You reasoning is sound however I have actually not seen a source where he was listed (implied) as a winner under an "et al" listing. It's the opposite: in the press releases from 2022 he was definitely not listed as neither Tony nominee, nor winner whenever an exhaustive list of producers for A Strange Loop was typed out:
He's not listed there, but Variety says he did get it and the Tony award operators confirmed that he got it, including the statuette. So the options are:
I was not trying to start a conspiracy theory. I was only answering to whether "et al" listings in award shows are commonplace. As far as I am aware, they do not exist, and even in this case I did not see such a listing anywhere, apart from the fact that Variety mentioned it retroactively. Perhaps, they did not mean a literal "et al".
The award shows are public for a reason: if we suppose the existence of privately handed out awards, even in cases where exhaustive lists of recepients are published officially, then a lot of Wikipedia pages on the topic become potentially misleading. I think that the Spielberg case, whatever happened there, is pretty exceptional, and, as I see it, it is fair to say that his 2022 Tony award was only publically awarded to him in 2026 (I don't doubt the truthfulness of Variety's reporting on Tony award operators' stance). ~2026-78218-9 (talk) 14:15, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the 2022 awards ceremony, it doesn't look like everyone listed even in the original listing for Strange Loop producers/directors got up on stage to be handed a statuette either. Is it really implausible that Tonys are being awarded in private?
It seems to me that "et. al" listings are purely a Wikipedia invention. If you go on the Talks page of the article that you linked you will find that the user @Ssilvers shortened the exhaustive listings "by deleting the non-notable names", and asked other users to not add them back in. If you go to the sources listed on that Wikipedia page (eg the 2022 nominations on the Tony Awards website), you will not find "et al" listings (at least I couldn't). Therefore I stand by my original assertion that "et al" lists of winners published by awards bodies are nonexistant in practice.
Whoever goes on stage to receive the statuette has never been relevant: not every notable award is televised; and not everyone can be physically present there for various reasons. The published press releases, however, have been historically designed to be exhaustive. Perhaps, the idea to shorten the lists of winners on Wikipedia using the criterion of notability is the problematic one in terms of Wikipedia not being misleading. ~2026-78218-9 (talk) 22:52, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

This article talks about competitive/non-competitive EGOTs without first explaining what the difference is. If somebody knows the difference, can they please add an explanation before the first use of the term? — SkyLined (talk)12:40, 19 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
