Boethius, in his De consolatione philosophiae (The Consolation of Philosophy), was probably the first to use this device. His work, composed in alternate passages of verse and prose, was written while he was imprisoned, circa 524 CE.

Not sure why you redirected from Visionary Literature (this article is about a literary device), but I think I like it. Visionary Literature has been hijacked by New Agers and charlatans. Dreams are so much closer to the subjective ontological reality of the day and closer to what I believe the term "Visionary Literature" truly represents. I love it so much I started a new category for visionary writers.

[edit]As I understand it, the content of this article is the usual list of works of the genre of dream vision. Articles of this type should be informative and , most importantly, meaningful. Why is this listed on the deja vu page as a synonym for deja reve?
