Name origins

As a descendant of Duleys, I'd like to add that there are two proposed origins for the name- the Norman D'Oiulley & the Gaelic O'Dubhloaich. While some people assume the name O'Dubhlaoich translates as "Dark Skinned Warrior," meaning he was tawny or a foreigner, I've both been assured by a professional Irish historian that such a naming convention doesn't exist in Gaelic culture & referring to someone with tan skin or dark hair as "black" appears to entirely be a Germanic & Scandanavian thing, not a Celtic thing.

What I have discovered is that a Pictish sun god named Cruach, who came to have a small following in Ireland by the time of Christianization as the remaining Picts merged completely with the Scots, Welsh, Irish & Cornish, was often referred to as Crom Cruach & Crom Dubh & many people who had dedicated their patronage to him or were druids of his cult carried the word Dubh (black) as part of an identifier, ergo the name is probably intended to mean "Warrior dedicated to Cruach."

Also, there are tons of identified variants of this last name, too- Duley, Dooley, Duelley, Delay, Dilley, Dubley, Dowley, Dowling, etc. Up until recently, you can often catch families flip-flopping in spelling or having it spelled in one of the labeled ways on different legal documents.
