Sources:, , public records also list her name as that only in aliases only like in find a grave or ancestry or whatever else, more sources , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Summer changed her first name from LaDonna to Donna as listed in one of these sources. The page used the birth name LaDonna until this edit earlier in 2023, which claimed that "Her own daughter, Brooklyn Sodano, found her mother's birth certificate. Her birth name was Donna; LaDonna was a family nickname. Sodano says the misunderstanding came from her mother's own book" - sourced from this interview. Official Massachusetts birth records (primary sources) give the birth name Donna. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:46, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
For our readers though, it's very misleading to have two sources, one in the lead sentence, and the other in the Early life section that explicitly state she was born LaDonna Andrea Gaines. There is no mention in the article, that I can find, to explain to our readers that LaDonna was a family nickname, or the misunderstanding came from her mother's own book.Isaidnoway(talk)19:28, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree that the article should say something about this, since the claim that her birth name was "LaDonna" can be found in a lot of sources, even some reliable ones, and editors continue to war about her birth name. Perhaps a couple of sentences in the Early life section to say Some sources claim that her birth name was "LaDonna", but the name is "Donna" on her birth certificate. Her daughter says that "LaDonna" was a childhood nickname. along with a cite to the daughter's interview. CodeTalker (talk) 19:06, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Donna does state on page 5 of her 2003 memoir that she was born LaDonna. However, according to Summer's parents, who were interviewed for her 1995 biography episode (at 5.09), her dad wanted to name her "LaDonna" but her mother thought it sounded a bit sleazy, so they settled on Donna, but later found out that LaDonna actually meant "a lady who sings", which would have been appropriate after all. I guess Donna prefered the story that she was named that. So yes, Donna is officially her birth name. Crisso (talk) 09:49, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

As stated in an accompanying text box, the section regarding "rumored homophobic remarks" may compromise the article's neutrality by giving undue focus on a specific event during her career. As a suggestion, this section could be condensed and integrated into the "Music career" section of the article, specifically in the "1986–1989: All Systems Go, Another Place and Time" subsection. Kevin Hoffler's claims and most of the further developments included were made in 1989, and thus fit within the specified time period. DalekonEarth (talk) 20:22, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
