Mixed race

While talking about The Expanse, Dominique compared the divided loyalties of her character to her own life and being mixed race and her own sense of belonging to different groups at the same time. Might be worth mentioning in the article that she is mixed race. An article from The Verge describes Dominique as British and Dominican. (The intro does describe her as English-Dominican but the source for that isn't clear and the Early life section doesn't say anything about it.) -- 109.79.88.232 (talk) 02:43, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

As this is a Biography of a Living Person Wikipedia:BLP Wikipedia requires top quality sources to support any entry, the tvguide.com definitely fails, while The Verge is a reliable source for use in articles relating to technology, science, and automobiles. ~ BOD ~ ^TALK 03:02, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

The character Naomi Nagata has a Japanese surname, the show has a racially diverse cast, and Dominique has mentioned race before in interviews about the show. Hearing her talk about it again, this time I thought it would be good if her Wikipedia article mentioned it too. The TVGuide article is not another regular article but is actually a transcript of a video (embedded on the same page, and on Youtube), so you can watch the words come directly from Dominique, but she talks generally about being mixed race, without specifying her background. That why I mentioned another source, namely the Verge article because it does specify, and called her "British-Dominican".

There's a point I'm trying to make clear, that perhaps I haven't adequately explained yet, so I'll try again. There are plenty of British people who are Afro Caribbean, and they are proud to be both British and another nationality, or proud of their ancestry, without being mixed race. That is part of what I'm hoping could be made clearer. Dual nationality isn't entirely clear on it's own. (An old friend of mine is proud to be British and Zimbabwean but is not mixed race either.)

The reference in the Infobox (an archived copy of a profile on the site thebedford.co.uk) calls her "half British and half Dominican". Her site DominiqueTipper.com also calls her British Dominican, so it is not clear why the article currently says "English-Dominican" rather than "British-Dominican". Better sources would be great, and I bring it up hoping people might be able to suggest better sources, but based on what is available now it seems like the article should be changed to say "British-Dominican" unless other sources become available. -- 109.79.88.232 (talk) 04:17, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Firstly, You write your argument with great clarity and it is well made.

Secondly, big apologies the TV Guide is considered generally reliable for television-related topics. Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources is a really useful guide regards many sources.

(Note: Using YouTube as a source are generally removed from Wikipedia because most videos on YouTube are anonymous, self-published, and unverifiable, and should be avoided. (WP:YOUTUBE and WP:VIDEOLINK). HOWEVER Content uploaded from a verified official account, such as that of a news organization, may be treated as originating from the uploader and therefore inheriting their level of reliability and "If using the link as a source to support article content, then you must establish that the uploader and the video meet the standards for a reliable source").

Even though they are (probably wrongly) in the article I am not sure if we should be using thebedford.co.uk or http://www.dominiquetipper.com/biography/ DominiqueTipper.com as they are not Secondary Sources, Primary sources are generally avoided.

Finally be careful of not including original research by yourself. (See Wikipedia:No original research and Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Sorry about the links, but they explain things better than i can.)

WP:BLP didn't appear to offer any specific guidance on Britishness, but I didn't try and dig into the archives so there are probably past discussions on it. I've changed the article to it to match what the she says about herself and what the sources say which is British Dominican. I would have liked to include notes about her family but she doesn't seem to have mentioned specifics about her parents in any of the interviews I looked at. If there is a a reason to mark her as English rather than British -- and by itself her growing up in London does not seem like a good reason to ignore the sources -- then it should be made clear but in the meantime it makes sense to stick with what the sources actually say. -- 109.78.200.129 (talk) 22:18, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
