Peer Review

[edit]

The subject of your article is very interesting, I have never thought about the origin of domesticated cats and how extensive it dates back. I recommend adding titles for each section to help provide direction for the reader prior to diving into the section. I recommend revising some of your sentences to help improve flow, and I noticed your subject and verb tense is not consistent. You need to maintain the same tense through each sentence as well as through each section. This will make it easier to read and greatly improve the overall flow of the article. For your citations you can utilize wikipedia's program that manually cites an article for you and formats it. Also, try to relate to the articles you are using when referencing a specific study.

Domestication doubts

[edit]

I found this article from a few years ago comparing studies about whether cats have been fully domesticated: https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/are-cats-domesticated (October 23, 2015) Mapsax (talk) 01:06, 24 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Evolution of the domesticated cat → Domestication of cats – This title makes more sense, as similar articles (domestication of the horse, domestication of the dog, domestication of the Syrian hamster, etc.) are titled this way. Grammatical Error

[edit]

The part that says “ scientists have found it difficult to identify exactly which region gave rise to modern domestic cat believed that it was not just one incident that led to” seems to contain poor grammar, but maybe I’m just not reading it correctly. 24.7.63.20 (talk) 16:41, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Domestication of the cat → Domestication of cats – Hello, this page could not be moved because the redirect has two revisions. The reason for the change is that the article in question reflects the domestication of more than one cat species/population throughout history. nahle.ghini (talk) 07:54, 2 June 2026 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). 1isall (talk | contribs) 13:38, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Looks like every "domestication of x" article I can see has format of "the cat" instead of "cats", or "the dog" instead of "dogs" and so on. It makes sense to me. Wamalotpark (talk) 10:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Tough the horse/dog article names are worded that way, if you skim through the cat article, there are multiple Felis species mentionned, all of which are commonly called "cat", with more than one having undergone domestication in some form. Whereas for example in dogs it's simpler: gray wolf→dog, with only the domestic dogs being commonly called "the dog". nahle.ghini (talk) 10:34, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oppose 'the cat' is the proper terminology for referring to the species. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:17, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but the point above was that the current article covers multiple cat species. nahle.ghini (talk) 05:42, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The article covers the domestic cat, which was domesticated from the African wildcat. There is a single section dedicated to a failed domestication attempt of the leopard cat. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:52, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The domesticaton of the African wildcat, then further domesticaton of the domestic cat, and the failed domestication of the Leopard cat, and the European wildcat of which some may have been partially domesticated which would explain why they contributed some ancestry to the dom. cat.
To me that seems like enough domestication of enough cats to have "cats" in the name, altough I thought this would be a minor change, since someone is strongly opposed I will withdraw the move thing. Once I figure out how. nahle.ghini (talk) 06:09, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
We also have domestication of the dog despite the domestic dog and wolf being distinct. The leopard cat thing is more of just providing information on a similar example, but I don't think it changes the overall scope of the article, as it isn't mentioned in the lead. European wildcat hybridisation is just that, we also have the Bengal cat for example.
You don't have to withdraw it, this is a formal requested move now so we can later other editors weigh in. Traumnovelle (talk) 06:14, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
