Should the subheading Death be grouped with illnesses/health issues faced by Parton?

Seems a logical conclusion as cause of death is not given, and if/when it is then that can be added later, but it would help to provide readers context. ~2026-46482-49 (talk) 18:32, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

Career/Death sections

The career section currently ends with "Parton made her first major appearance since the health scare to give the keynote address at Dollywood during the 41st anniversary celebration." without mentioning what the "health scare" was or when it happened. The next sentence is "On 14 August 2026, over a week before her death,", while the death itself isnt mentioned in the Death section. Her death section meanwhile reads "In May 2026, Parton said she was responding well to treatment after, as she put it, her immune and digestive systems "got all out of whack."" mentioning her response to the treatment before mentioning the cause, not calling it a health scare like above and it isnt clear if its related to her death at all.

It makes for a very awkward read, especially since there are a bunch of sections in between the week before her death in the career section and the death section. — jonas (talk) 22:31, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

Tributes

This section should be nipped in the bud. Henry Winkler? Megyn Kelly? Who cares? Everybody who is anybody is going to have something to say. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 20:04, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

Agreed. I don't think we need a list of celebrity reactions, it could quickly become indiscriminate. A section about her funeral or memorial service might be appropriate if and when it receives a lot of coverage Gibson (talk) 20:33, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
Well, someone reverted my edit with, "A tribute is a tribute", so just watch this fill up with a million barely notable or relevant names. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 21:01, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
Agree that WP:MEMORIAL is important here. The fact the presedent ordered flags at half staff is probably worth noting, but not the laundry list of platitudes (or the flowers and cards). --ZimZalaBimtalk 21:03, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

I don't think it is garbage it is relevant to her page and there isn't a lot of it like there is on Michael's. No point having a tributes section if there isn't going to be any tributes. I have removed more irrelevant ones. ItsShandog (talk) 22:49, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
The point of tributes sections is to mention there were tributes when reliable sources mention their existence. It is not a place for a laundry list of platitudes. --ZimZalaBimtalk 23:21, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
Where is the laundry list? I see ones perfectly fine to add and one sentence about flowers and memorial books is hardly a lot it shows the tributes paid to her after her death the way people are talking you'd think there was two or three paragraphs of tributes. ItsShandog (talk) 23:23, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
Yes, and that's what's there once unimportant words from Henry Winkler and Megyn Kelly and such were removed. Thanks for understanding. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 23:44, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
I have since removed as the ones that are there now seem the most important and relevant to add out of them all. No problem. ItsShandog (talk) 23:45, 25 August 2026 (UTC)

@RTSthestardust: I like the direction, but I think it takes too much off of the left side. I'd leave a bit of black to balance the right side above her shoulder. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 01:37, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
Ok I get it. Just wanted to make a crop that could be used for some articles. RTSthestardust (talk) 01:47, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
To clarify, I think the right crop is a pretty small crop of the left side. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 01:47, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
Proper lead room requires a greater crop of empty space on the left, precisely what you call "too much". The larger space should be on the right side where she is looking. Binksternet (talk) 02:11, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
I'm familiar with the concept, but I think head room is a bit more important for this portrait and the center of interest definitely includes her hair. It is not empty space. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 13:14, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
Excellent choice. Surtsicna (talk) 12:11, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
I still think the original layout is better, especially since this crop removes part of her hair. If the black background of the photo is absolutely to be cropped, I would rather have one that still includes her full features and at least some of the background. "Health and death" order

Parton's hospitalization should be listed before her death in the Health and death section.

Every other section is in chronological order. It makes no sense to talk about her treatment from May, then say "she died", then say "she was hospitalized". Surely having it in order makes much more sense.

I suggest something like:

She was hospitalized at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 21, 2026. She died there on August 25, at age 80.

or

She was hospitalized at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 21, 2026. She died there four days later, at age 80.

Dolly Parton did not write "Islands in the Stream"

"Islands in the Stream" was written by the Gibb brothers--Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb--of the Bee Gees, not Parton.

This incorrect information is currently in the second paragraph of Parton's entry and is not sourced.

Parton released 49 studio albums and wrote more than three thousand songs, including "I Will Always Love You" – a two-time U.S. country chart-topper and an international success for Whitney Houston that became the best-selling single by a woman – "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors", and the Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "9 to 5" and "Islands in the Stream" (a duet with Kenny Rogers). incorrect message about her Faith

Dolly Parton was a Christian woman who loved Jesus and had an extreme amount of faith. You mentioned that she had faith in herself, maybe she mentioned that in an interview, but she never intended that to replace her faith in Jesus. Her true fans knew this about her. Personal Life and Faith

Dolly Parton wrote and performed dozens of Christian songs. Her personal life section attempts to secularize her and diminish her legacy as a non-judgmental Christian and is totally inaccurate. She spoke often about being a Christian and her faith in Jesus. She went as far as to tell Sabrina Carpenter before e collaboration that “I don’t cuss or make fun of Jesus.” Her family’s announcement of her death said that she is “wrapped in the arms of Jesus.” https://www.al.com/news/2026/08/dolly-parton-taught-a-veteran-reporter-about-faith-and-why-she-always-loved-alabama.html?outputType=amp

Also why is the Sabrina carpenter bit not added ~2026-45897-64 (talk) 22:10, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
Because this is a page on Dolly Parton. And I don't think the Sabrina Carpenter bit is important enough or particularly notable enough to be added. Eh-st-har (talk) 04:50, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
It’s just evidence of her being a CHRISTIAN. The page makes it seem like she was a humanist or secular and she wasn’t. She was a vocal practicing Christian. ~2026-45897-64 (talk) 05:54, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Now the page has been even more editing in a misleading way. This is a lady who sang numerous Christian songs and identified as a follower of Jesus? Why is there blatant misrepresentation
“I pray a lot. And God’s been really good to me,” the icon told a crowd when asked about her secret to success during a 2026 event at Dollywood.
"I do believe that through God all things are possible. I do believe that Jesus loves me. And I just use that. I'm never ashamed of my family. I'm never ashamed of my religion."

“Every day I pray for God to lead me and to take out all the wrong things, wrong people in my life, and bring all the right things, right people, and to let me glorify Him and uplift mankind, to do something in this world to make it a little better than it was,” Dolly told The Christian Post in 2019. “And let me be a light and a vessel to be used.”

“So, I kinda held that also in the back of my mind, whether that was predestined or not, or whether I just took that little grain of faith and made that so for myself,” the Grammy-winner continued. “I never let go of that. I always felt responsible to God that I was supposed to be doing something for God. I still feel like that, and I’m still doing it, trying to. Sinning all the way, but trying my best, and asking forgiveness seventy times seven.”

In addition, she sang dozens of Christian songs? Why is this page so misleading? It seems intentional. ~2026-45897-64 (talk) 06:03, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
@~2026-45897-64 You don't need to make so many different talk page sections on the same thing.
The Faith section mentions numerous times that she is religious, believes in God and Jesus, that she prays, etc. Strugglehouse (talk) 13:35, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
it does now thank you for adjusting it to be more accurate ~2026-46646-94 (talk) 18:02, 27 August 2026 (UTC)

Intentionally misleading about her religion

The page appears intentionally misleading about her religion. Dolly Parton spoke about her Christianity as spiritual rather than strictly religious, but was openly a Christian and believer in Jesus, singing dozens of songs about it and being repeatedly quoted about it.

Now the page has been even more editing in a misleading way. This is a lady who sang numerous Christian songs and identified as a follower of Jesus? Why is there blatant misrepresentation “I pray a lot. And God’s been really good to me,” the icon told a crowd when asked about her secret to success during a 2026 event at Dollywood. I'm not seeing any serious contradictions. She just didn't believe in using religion as a bludgeon. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:54, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
What exactly do you think is misleading? Is it a certain sentence? Eh-st-har (talk) 08:23, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
I'd argue that the combination of Dolly Parton#Faith and Dolly Parton#Philanthropy and advocacy perfectly summarizes her faith. She clearly had personal convictions, didn't want to beat people over the head with them (in contrast to modern American evangelism), and instead actually lived out her faith through her good works. TNstingray (talk) 13:37, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Completely agree with these replies. I've made various edits and improvements that hopefully capture the nuance of her personal faith, but would appreciate other editors having a look and also contributing to this section as it's clearly been more contentious as a subject, as seen in the many talk page sections on the subject. Undoubtedly, (Christian) faith was clearly very important to her, but she often rejected the label "religious" and sought to not make it an identity but rather something she lived and practiced, meaning how both secondary and primary sources report on the topic is quite complex and nuanced. Tour success history

I don't know if there's a place for this in the article currently, but Pollstar just released a comprehensive article regarding the last 40 years of Dolly Parton's touring history. She performed to over 2.8 million people and generated $168m worth of ticket sales. Could possibly fit in "Music history" section? Kind regards to regular contributors, and obviously, RIP to a beautiful human being. Homeostasis07 (talk/contributions) 22:33, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

Née or no née

I changed the first sentence of this article to include the her maiden name like this: Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean (née Parton; January 19, 1946 – August 25, 2026) I saw that it was changed back and forth so I think it should be discussed whether it should be included or not. AsaQuathern (talk) 23:05, 26 August 2026 (UTC)

Is Dolly Dean really the name people who know her independent of being a public figure know her by?? Georgia guy (talk) 23:13, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
I agree for sure she was not known by that name at all. I wonder if it's a requirement to include it by the MOS or not. I don't think so I think some clarity is needed. AsaQuathern (talk) 23:18, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
The manual of style standard is to include it - see MOS:NEE, specifically the example relating to Hillary Clinton. Some other examples are Priyanka Chopra, Michelle Obama and Jada Pinkett Smith are some other FA or GA class examples of similar situations.
Without it, a reader is likely to infer that "Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean" is her birth name because Wikipedia's standard is usually to mention name changes in the lead. RachelTensions (talk) 01:29, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
That's what I was thinking. I think Priyanka Chopra is a near identical precedent that should be followed. @Georgia guy thoughts? AsaQuathern (talk) 02:39, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
The important thing is: does anyone actually know her as Dolly Dean?? A reliable source must reveal a statement like:

All people who know her independent of her public profession know her by the name Dolly Dean.

Georgia guy (talk) 10:06, 27 August 2026 (UTC)

@Georgia guy This has already been explained in your last talk page section. It does not matter how she was known. The legal name is first no matter the common name, etc., per MOS:FULLNAME. Strugglehouse (talk) 13:22, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
As worded, it's kind of awkward. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 20:41, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Her full legal name was indeed Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean. Please update this. Setracie (talk) 21:49, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
It already says that, at least at the moment. Meanwhile, I'm curious to know what legal documents of hers that you've seen. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:00, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
See https://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/dec/06/dolly-parton-more-to-me-than-big-hair-phoney-stuff for example - "my passport is Dolly Parton Dean. I sign a lot of my contracts Dean." Strugglehouse (talk) 22:08, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Buddy, it is common knowledge. One Google search from the Guardian is all it takes.
Hop off the high horse. Setracie (talk) 22:10, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
