In 1960 DeSoto had a disastrous year, selling only 23,000 units. The Mercury Comet, introduced mid-year, sold 5 times as many. Compacts were hot, and Motor Trend reported that if DeSoto returned for 1961, it would most likely be as a “luxury compact.”

Well, DeSoto did offer a full-size model for 1961, but it was discontinued 7 weeks after its introduction and eventually sold just 3000 units. Was the Lancer originally intended to be a DeSoto? Worth researching. 96.237.184.133 (talk) 96.237.184.133 (talk) 15:02, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
