Medicalization of childbirth
[edit]I have removed the following paragraphs from the article:
In addition to the above, Doctor Slop is used by Sterne to satirise the "medicalisation" of childbirth. Firstly, Tristram's father puts pressure on his mother not to have the baby born at home but in an up-to-the-minute hospital in London. The mother stands her ground and a compromise is reached. The child can be birthed at home but Doctor Slop is to be retained to "control" the birth.
In the event, Doctor Slop arrives unprepared, and he and Tristram's father and Uncle Toby sit beside the fire with Slop pontificating on birth and how it is to be dealt with, all accompanied by draughts of drink. Meanwhile the women, including the midwife, go on with the work with no input from the experts.
The first paragraph is incorrect - in the book, Tristram's mother wants to go to London for the birth, but her husband refuses on the grounds of an obscure clause in the marriage license. These paragraphs seem to be OR anyway so I just removed them. 73.223.96.73 (talk) 05:07, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
