Ditto symbol?

Typographically speaking, is a ditto mark one of the directional quote marks, vertical quote marks, double prime marks, or something else (“, ”, ", or ″)? I'm thinkinking it's vertical quote marks, but this should say something about that. ―BenFrantzDale 04:25, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Maybe someone might want to translate (or compose an article similar to) the rather exhaustive German article Unterführungszeichen. Doesn't "ditto" in fact mean "said"? Everything except the words "the said" is parenthesized, but still the emphasis seems so mislocated that the reader might not take away the idea that "ditto" means "said". Michael Hardy (talk) 17:48, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
