Point taken, but...

[edit]

If a man has a penis but does not insert it anywhere, it is still a penis. If a woman wears an artificial penis to disguise herself as a man, as did several European women during the eighteenth-century in order to become soldiers, but does not insert it anywhere, is it a dildo? And is it a dildo in the same way as when a woman nowadays straps on a dildo to have sex with another woman or man? Do we need to distinguish between phallus, prosthesis, dildo, artifical penis, etc?

See the sex toy article for more on this... -- Karada 17:47, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Feminists

[edit]

I think we can expunge any specific reference to "feminists" being offended by representations of the phallus. It's enough to say that when fashioning a dildo, slavishly reproducing the minutiae of the male genitalia is often either unnecessary, undesirable or irrelevant. Etymology query

[edit]

Do we have any evidence that the word "Dildo" was coined for the object spesifically? There are a few sources claiming the word originated as a filler word for songs (similar to "la dee dum"), yet the earliest record I can dig up is from the composer Thomas Morley, in "Will [You/Ye/Thee] Buy a Fine [dog/dogge]?" It seems reasonable one could interpret those lyrics as nothing raunchy, coming to the conclusion that the word is merely serving for the rhythm and such, however to me at least, it's pretty clearly just a bunch of innuendo for talking about a sex toy of some kind, implying the word at least already had connotations. I don't know how I missed the etymology subsection. My bad on that, still though it seems oddly worded. It says "...has long been considered unclear," however to my eye it is still very much a question mark, just maybe with threads to pull on. Nyull.pointer (talk) 20:02, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
