Name: apostrophe?

[edit]

So what is the origin of the name? Was it, as is so often true with geographical names, originally "Dick's Butte"? And who was Dick or Dicks? Enquiring minds want to know.Rags (talk) 06:35, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

The name was originally almost certainly Dick's Butte. The Geographic Names Information System has standardized names and now discourages the use of apostrophes. See #18 at their FAQs. As far as the origin of the name goes, I couldn't find an explanation online, although I looked. I enjoy reading and writing about unusual place names, so if you can out find anything, please add it.– Gilliam (talk) 07:59, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Infobox: Plaskette Ridge

[edit]

I wanted to update the Topo Map line in the infobox by linking Plaskett Ridge (the ridge named after it, which is related to/contains the butte). Since the ridge itself didn't have an article, I linked ridge to its general article, and trying to link Plaskett, I noticed that the Plaskett article redirects to Monterey County, California. However, the butte itself is indeed located in Mendocino County. I believe this ambiguity may be confusing for readers who come across this article.

I'm wondering whether and how Plaskett in the infobox should be linked to the other article; since I am not familiar with California, I cannot make the judgement myself. —Mansci (talk) 12:33, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
