i don't think derrickman report directly to driller. CMIIW,In typical drilling crew organization on a drilling rig, derrickman direct report is Asst Driller.On career progression concern the next promotion position after derrickman as Assistant Driller, then Driller.
Derrickhand reporting
[edit]I work as a derrickhand. On the rigs I have worked on (ground based rigs in the western USA), the derrickhand always reports to the driller. The job, when done correctly, requires a keen eye upon all equipment running on the ground such that any problems can be identified and handled, if at all possible, prior to them being a major problem. In this way the derrickhand can be thought of as the 'on ground driller', and in acting as such, it frees time of the driller for more attention upon the floor, down-hole issues, and running labor.
