Fouling of Tracks

What does fouling of tracks mean as reference in the article? 118.90.71.92 (talk) 19:26, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

It means that the track was obstructed somehow. In this case the tank-car protruded onto the main line. Kalmbach (talk) 19:32, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Failures

It is worth noting that while I've already removed what I believe to have been an incorrect statement on the 1987 Burnham, IL railroad accident, the 1958 Newark Bay rail accident also technically wasn't caused by a faulty derail. There was one involved in the incident, but it properly derailed the train and it was only the train's speeds combined with lacking ballast and distance to provide enough friction to completely stop the train in time that actually let the train fall off the bridge. Should this still be included in the article as it is not a strict example of a Derail device failing?

Furthermore, on the topic of a true failure, the Englewood Railway incident happened because the derail was incorrectly installed on rotting wood. That isn't exactly a failure of the derail itself. It would be better described as an operator error combined with poor track maintenance. Yes, I Made That Edit (talk) 02:44, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
