"Alignment" is likely a mistranslation

[edit]

"Παράταξη" in Greek has a number of distinct definitions (Wiktionary, LKN, Wordreference, Christiko).

The translation "Alignment" assumes the definition "arrangement, placing persons or things next to each other or behind each other" (translating Christiko), but the party's name uses the definition "organized group with common ideological and/or political principles; esp. Political Party".

Unless "Alignment" was used officially by the party in its international relations (in which case we have to accept it), it appears that a more appropriate English translation is "Democratic Wing" or "Democratic Faction".

I have not located any first-party sources in English, but "Alignment" has been used by the English version of the House of Representatives bio page for the party leader and a blog article from the Europarty ALDE (but in the ALDE affiliate register, a transliteration is used instead).

How does the community see the degree of prior art here? Relevant and official sources, but an extremely small number of them and all of them third-parties. Libresociety (talk) 22:08, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
