Greetings and Salutations AjaxSmack, and one and all - particularly Japanese speakers / those with an interest in Japanese history. Just to point out that the Japanese (hiragana) reading of this island is listed -for starters on the Wikipedia page, among other places - as Dejima (でじま), and the Dutch pronunciation as Deshima ( でしま).
- My background is several years of Japanese study (and residence in Japan for several years), plus a Master's Degree in Japanese studies with a focus on the Edo period. I always heard the island referred to as 'Dejima'.
However, I noticed that Jared Diamond uses the 'Deshima' spelling in a recent book (although he is not specifically a Japan specialist...
