Shoegaze

Shoegaze was added to the infobox under the false pretense that is had many sources backing it up. However, the sources cited all failed WP:EXPLICITGENRE and many were not even discussing Deftones. I believe it should be removed for being WP:FRINGE. The one source current cited clarifies that it is a fringe view. This article specifically says they are not shoegaze. Treblezine, PopMatters, Kerrang, Revolver and BrooklynVegan are all articles that discuss shoegaze and Deftones, but overtly stop short of calling the band shoegaze. Well, I didn't make you wait as long this time. There's a bunch of these kinds of examples in here and honestly, I think the genre note needs more cleanup. Ideally, we need to find ways to differentiate the genres that are individual works or influences, and the ones that directly describe the band. The NPR source used for progressive rock, for instance, is used extremely liberally... conversely, I do actually like the wording they use for shoegaze on Diamond Eyes, though. Still, not the band, I get it. Funny you mention Treblezine, especially when they make humorous little nods to us with stuff like this. Anyway, I get your argument, and if more people could participate I'd really appreciate that because, well, it's Deftones... mftp dan ^oops 01:24, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

As for additional sources on the shoegaze matter, I did find this, which looks sketchy to an untrained eye but is actually an WP:EXPERTSPS: "All of which makes it striking that Deftones have now become so closely associated with shoegaze..." mftp dan ^oops 01:29, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

I'd say the Enis source is another example of "articles that discuss shoegaze and Deftones, but overtly stop short of calling the band shoegaze". The Stereogum article I linked earier is also by him, which includes To be clear, neither Duster, Beach House, nor Deftones are explicitly shoegaze. This discussion has been up for almost two months, so I don't have a lot of hope anybody else will participate. I can look through the sources for the other genres in the body and clear up any WP:EXPLICITGENRE, but with only one source supporting Deftones as shoegaze (acknowledging fringe), would it be too bold to say there's consensus on its removal? Just my two cents, but yeah, Deftones isn't shoegaze. It can be argued that maybe a few of their slower/ballad songs could be called shoegaze, but broadly speaking, they're really just alternative metal, and perhaps also Sacramento Indie if you really want to pinpoint it. Having art rock up there is even kind of a stretch, but I get it and it certainly can apply to them. I think Deftones just have such a distinct and yet varied sound to them that doesn't quite concretely fit any genre absolutely perfectly, so people start throwing anything at the wall that might stick.
