Incomphrehensible

I can't make any sense of this article, and unfortunately don't have access to the Science paper at the moment. How did the experimenters induce activity in the visual cortex? To the best of my knowledge there is no way to do that using an fMRI machine, as the article seems to suggest. Looie496 (talk) 15:45, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

If true, this sounds profoundly dangerous to me. I understand what fMRI can reveal. But to say that a process can induce a thought, experience, or even mentally "seeing" a colour by exposing a person to a control subject's neural activity...While I can grasp that it could be possible, perhaps the popularized phrase "just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should" applies here. I ran across this area of research in a book by Richard Powers as the main character subjects his ADHD/Asperger's son to the brainwaves of his mother in order to induce calm and non-violent approaches to problem solving. How on earth?

It says "They did so by receiving the brain patterns of other volunteers..." How on earth does one person receive the brain patterns of another person? The article does not make sense without an explanation of this.
