I feel that this was a very well researched article with multiple resources. I have removed the external links section. It was a remnant of the citation lists. Thank you Unsigned comment by Connieb8745 (talk · contribs)
Multiple issues In contrast to the above comment, I see an article with multiple issues, even after the reworking I just gave it. It's full of unsupported claims about what is "typical", "most common" and "popular". The claims about typical requirements of building codes require appear to be original research and apply only to the USA (assumption that government is ordered national, state, county, municipal; specification in inches and lb/sq ft). Presumably, the statements about what kinds of railing are most common are also based on the author's experience in the USA. Dricherby (talk) 08:45, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Well-Researched Article
[edit]It is unfortunate that you feel that way. Also, instead of subtracting from the discussion, why not add something to it? If you have data and citations to disprove or otherwise disagree with the content in the article, why are these not included? If you can add information to the article that is specific to other countries, please do so. For example, if you had done some research you would be aware that building codes in the USA are based on those created by the International Code Council, and would not have flagged this article for not representing a worldwide view.
I feel that you lack an understanding of the subject. For example, you removed the word "typically" in regards to types of cable rail installations. If this word is removed, the subject is over-generalized. That is, there are many different ways to install a cable rail system. This article presented a reference to cable railing as a type of deck railing. Saying "Cable railings use s.s. cables strung horizontally." is entirely different than saying "Cable railings TYPICALLY use..." as this is just one of many possible configurations. Additionally, architects often use the word "typically" abbreviated "typ" on building plans to indicate that they realize that there is variation among and between building material. This is another area in which you are mistaken. ""Removed category "building materials": these aren't building materials but something that's built from them."" Deck railings are "building materials": material used in a building.
In the future, please add to the knowledge base instead of subtracting from it. Thanks.

I have a professional connection to the residential construction industry and am requesting this edit here rather than making changes directly.
I would like to propose a small addition to improve coverage of glass panel railing systems and related code considerations.
Suggested addition:
Glass panel railing systems are commonly used as infill or structural elements in guard systems for residential and commercial construction and may include components such as posts, shoe rails, clamps or other point-supported fittings, and/or continuous top rails or handrails depending on the design. In structural glass balustrade systems, engineering analyses have found that continuous top rails can help distribute design loads across multiple panels, reducing localized stresses and deflection. Building codes such as the International Building Code (IBC) or the International Residential Code (IRC) include specific provisions for glass used in guards, including requirements related to top rails and laminated glass panels used without top rails.

[edit]- The article discusses the different materials used in the construction of deck railing. However, none of those descriptions are longer than one or two sentence mentions The proposed text discussing glass panel railing systems is somewhat more detailed, with descriptions of their effectiveness. That is something no other descriptions afford, save for a description of traditional wood railings and their construction which was deleted.
- The information comes from three different sources, however, the request submitted by the COI editor did not include directions for those references' emplacement.
