Egyptian names and hieroglyphics

[edit]

I've added the hieroglyphs and the names from Budge (hopefully I transcribed it correctly). But Budge is kind of outdated, so if anybody has a better source then please go ahead and check to see that Budge got things right (and hile you're at it, maybe go and fix the transliterations to something more current).

Also, I've moved Budge's Ptolemaic forms (hieroglyphic and Coptic) to the "Graeco-Egyptian" column, but I kept the Gundel stuff that was already there. But I'm not entirely sure that Gundel's order and Budge's order are entirely in synch. Most of it seems to match, but nicely, but I don't know what's up with decan #9 and it looks like there's some confusion especially in the decans of Pisces, Aquarius, and Aries. (And in Taurus, it looks like Budge even contradicts himself for decans 4 and 5. Ārt should be paired with ⲉⲣⲱ, ⲁⲣⲟⲩ, while Khau should be paired with ⲭⲱⲟⲩ.)

Also, Budge's list has 37 decans rather than 36. Not really sure what's going on (looks like he split Sah in two) but I've added a row for that. 73.133.224.40 (talk) 19:07, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Decan ordering mishmash

[edit]

The text says

The first original decan position due to the precession in ancient times started at 0° of Cancer when the heliacal rising of Sirius (Egyptian Sepdet; Greco-Egyptian: Sothis) on sunset like Jewish and Islamic calendars marking the Egyptian New Year and now the 1st decan falls on 0° of Leo at July 20 in the Julian calendar, that is July 22/23 on the Gregorian calendar.

Yet the table immediately below shows current (?) Decan 1 beginning with Aries, not Leo. This quasi-sentence needs editing for clarity, agreement, and possible correction since "heliacal rising" is taken to occur at sunrise, not sunset. 2001:5A8:4610:2000:DC0F:DEA6:9D06:EA99 (talk) 19:03, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I've corrected the obvious errors, but a citation is still needed. Since this article covers the Egyptian decans, not the modern astrological ones, the table should possibly be reordered to start at Leo. Any other editors have any input on that? Skyerise (talk) 11:59, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
What is meant by "original decan position"? Is this c. 2100 BCE, when decans first appear, 100 BCE when decans were first combined with zodiacs in Hellenistic times or around the year 4000 BCE that Eqyptians used as a sort of time zero for some star charts. Unless you already know the answer, it wont make sense. Also, the paragraph, itself, is still grammatically nonsensical at several points.70.59.91.4 (talk) 04:13, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Greco-Egyptian column

[edit]

This particular column is very important. This is pre-coptic, or koine Greek used to write Egyptian. We can see that many of these values were the accepted forms that appear in the current Egyptian Decipherments, whether they are correct or not.

The author had a clear understanding of Egyptian Core vocabulary, whether or not he made mistakes. And he did make mistakes.

W17 as ⲭⲟⲛⲧ, survives today, as the decipherment, whether it is correct or not; and that word didn't survive into coptic. I list that one as: Coptic - qlmai(ϭⲗⲙⲁⲓ) - jar, vase, whether I am correct or not.

The Latinization on this wiki page is atrocious, ⲭⲟⲛⲧⲁⲣⲉ: "Χont-har". The "h" in "har" is hallucinated.

In the fire-drill example, U28: ⲫⲟⲩⲧⲏⲧ, Phu-Tet, U28 is read as coptic - ⲧⲁⲧ(tat) - djed pillar

Now a fire-drill does look like a djed pillar, however, a djed pillar is R11 not U28. Because the Greek decipherer mis-identified this symbol, that is the origin of the "t" decipherment of U28; it wasn't properly validated. Probably Coptic - krom(ⲕⲣⲱⲙ) - fire, is the more correct decipherment.

Finally, here is the lion, F4, above it: ⲏⲧⲏⲧ - Ha-tet. There is no "H" in Greek. ⲏ is a vowel, as shown by the second instance. So the latinization is "e-tet", not Ha-tet. Is the lion Coptic - ethe(ⲉⲑⲏ) or it's phonetic cousin Het(ϩⲏⲧ⸗)? The Greek Decipherer chose "ethe", but you lose that from the poor latinization. ~2026-23373-27 (talk) 18:46, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
