Planned Changes

We are planning to expand on what separates quiescent disk galaxies from the more common quiescent non-disk (elliptical) galaxies. This change would involve adding more information on other types of dead galaxies, and clarifying what a disk galaxy is (spiral, lenticular). Also, as lenticular galaxies are defined by low star formation rates, the difference between lenticular and dead needs to be made clear.

The current version of the page is also entirely supported by one paper on an early dead disk galaxy. Another dead disk was discovered in 2024, so we will include what was learned from it. We would also like to include more sources on the current theories of evolution/characteristics on disk galaxies for the context of why a dead disk is notable, like shock heating for dead disks at the center of galaxy clusters. This change would involve providing more context on current bottom-up galaxy evolution models and quenching factors.

Additional context for the timeline of galaxy formation / quiescence would also be beneficial, as the one cited paper is specifically on a high redshift galaxy. Abanyas (talk) 00:25, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
