Field Punishment No.1
[edit]The series showed a conscientious objector being tied to a stake in No Man's Land for the Germans to shoot at (with machine-gun fire on the soundtrack). The article falsely claims that 'newspaper illustrations' from the time proved this was true. In fact the illustrations, from an army manual, showed Field Punishment No.1 (not specifically for conscientious objectors), in which a military offender was tied to a gun wheel for two hours. This only ever happened in rear areas, where the man was at no more risk from enemy artillery than anyone else. The writer and director were simply and culpably wrong, as they were in that later play about the Kasztner Train, and this was brought out in the press at the time. ~2026-39181-25 (talk) 19:14, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
