Am I mistaken that the linked source, Percival Serle's 2-volume Dictionary of Australian Biography (Sydney, 1949), is in the public domain? Serle died in 1951. Prior to 2005, Australian copyright expired 50 years after the death of the author, so by my understanding this work entered the public domain in 2001 and all of its use on Wikipedia was permissible (though as noted by me and other past editors of this article, some of the phrasing and structure was antiquated and awkward, and necessitated revision). Since 2005, Australian copyright is 70 years from the death of the author, but this was not applied retrospectively, and even if it had, the work would have re-entered the public domain in 2021. Or am I totally missing something here? (For the avoidance of doubt, Serle's Dictionary of Australian Biography is not the same as the in-copyright and widely-cited Australian Dictionary of Biography) Axver (talk) 01:57, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
