You can add the following to the lead: Karl did early work on the bacterial communities of undersea hydrothermal vents and was one of the first to observe and sample these communities from a submersible, He also helped reveal the microbial food webs in the waters around Antarctica and was one of the initiators of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series.
