Proposal to merge in Data element name and Data element definition

[edit source]

Since the Data element article is very short, I propose that we merge the separate articles on Data element name and Data element definition as sections in this one article. Separately, I propose that some of the examples of naming in ISO/IEC 11179 be merged into Data element name, and ultimately into here. RayGates 22:38, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would like to keep the Data element definition page separate. I would like to be able to link to it seperately and add use cases to extend the article. I agree that Data element is short but I propose we can extend it. - Dan Feb. 1st
O.K., Dan. I have removed the merge templates. RayGates 01:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Overly idealistic?

[edit source]

Isn't the definition of "precise definition & precise semantics" way too optimistic? In an ideal world I'd agree, but in the real world things often tend to be highly imprecise & ambiguous semantics. Just my experience. DEddy (talk) 14:24, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

merge proposal 2025

[edit source]

Noting that there has been little progress in expanding the three articles discussed in the 2006 merge proposal. It's time that the proposed merge is revisited. The articles Data element, Data element name and Data element definition are short and overlap considerably so they should be one article. The article could also include concepts like Critical Data Elements. The thinking around data elements in the context of data management is also more developed in 2025 than it was in 2006. So a single article could have plenty of notable content. Duncnbiscuit (talk) 09:53, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
