Tailoring is a profession which is done by the people of different religions and communities of India for their livelihood. Talking about the old times, the tailoring business can be seen among the elite class people because in Indian elite society only There was a custom of stitched clothes, on the contrary, in the middle class Indian tradition, it was customary to wrap it over the body rather than wearing. Taylor's work is done by people of different ethnic community in different regions of India. The most adopted work among different castes is that of tailor. Various castes have adopted it as a profession, most of them are from Hindu castes and some Muslim castes have also adopted it as a better alternative profession. In the Indian subcontinent, the term “Darzi” is not a caste, but rather a professional title for tailors (sewing professionals) found among both Hindus and Muslims. The 1891 Marwar Census Report, compiled by Denzil Ibbetson, clearly states:

“Darzi, or tailor, is not a caste but a professional title; and for members of the Peepavanshi community of Rajputs to be called Darzi would be considered socially degrading.” [1]

Peepa Kshatriya Rajputs are a distinct Kshatriya community, historically associated with the Marwar and Hadoti regions of Rajasthan. It is believed that this lineage descends from the 52 Rajput disciples, attendants, and followers of Saint Pipa Ji Maharaj.

Saint Pipa Ji Maharaj himself was a Khichi Chauhan Rajput king, who ruled Gagron Fort (present-day Jhalawar, Rajasthan). In 1475 CE, he renounced his throne and adopted the path of devotion and social reform. Saint Pipa Ji actively opposed social discrimination and spread messages of equality, courage, and devotion.

Inspired by his teachings, his 52 Rajput followers took up agriculture and tailoring (sewing) as their occupations. Hence, they came to be known as Peepavanshi Darzis, although their social identity remained that of Peepa Kshatriya (Rajput).

Saint Pipa Ji is also regarded in India as a pioneer of guerrilla warfare tactics. His followers have been historically known for their bravery, devotion, and service. References: Denzil Ibbetson in his 1891 publication The Castes of Marwar, clearly stated: “Darzi is not a caste but a professional title. Munshi Hardayal Singh also documented their lineage and social status in his book The Castes of Marwar (1891). The Darzi caste, sometimes pronounced Darji, are Hindus and Muslim community both, found in India and Pakistan. A small number are also found in the Terai region of Nepal. Darzi means tailor. They are also known as Kshatriya Darji in Hindus [4] and Idrisi[5] in Muslim Community. The Darzi or Darji are a community of tailors, numbering around more than 3,240,00 people in India. Darzi are largely a landless or less land community whose main occupation is tailoring. The profession of tailoring is being done by Both Hindu and Muslim Community. In Hindu Community, Darzi are known as Hindu Darzi who have mainly Gotras of kshatriya Varna. In muslim community, Darzi caste is known as Idrisi (Hazrat Idris). The idrisi community of Uttar Pradesh and bihar are those Turkic Muslim tribes of the 13th century who were settled in Delhi and different states of India. In India, Darzi was historically an occupation (profession), not an indigenous caste, because for a very long period the common method of wearing clothes in the subcontinent was draping, not stitching. Garments such as the dhoti, saree, angavastram, and similar clothing were wrapped or tied, not sewn.
