River mouth, Romania or Ukraine?

[edit]

While this article lists Romania as the location for the river mouth, the coordinates for the mouth are 6km east of the Romanian border, putting the terminus of the river squarely inside Ukraine. The delta is of course massive, and contains many forks in both countries, but based on Google Map's labeling, the main fork/branch (inherently not labeled as a fork) follows the Ukrainian/Romanian border until a point along its course 6km from the actual mouth, where the border dips south pushing Romania's boundaries significantly south of the river and well north of Ukraine's border.

My intent is to simply change the mouth's "location" field to Ukraine. Objections?  Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartographile (talkcontribs) 20:00, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'd suggest to Just change It into Romania and Ukraine. 91.80.17.247 (talk) 09:36, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'd say to call it "Romania-Ukraine border" (with whatever type of dash is appropriate) InfoManiac297 (talk) 07:00, 7 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Upper vs Lower Danube

[edit]

It would be helpful to the lay reader if Upper and Lower were clearly defined in the article. Is there general agreement on the parameters? Eddylyons (talk) 23:08, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Danube vs Danube River vs river Danube

[edit]

Moved from my talk page. -- ZH8000 (talk) 13:57, 25 April 2025 (UTC) Reply

Hi. I do not understand your revert. WP:NCRIVER says "X river" (i.e. non-capitalized "river") is not recommended. Mellk (talk) 13:08, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

The lowercase "river" is used for disambiguation e.g. "Danube (river)" or "river Danube". Am I missing something? Mellk (talk) 13:13, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
It would be great if you would engage with me first before making such changes. I see an argument that we do not need to include "river Danube" in the title if the main article does not have any disambiguation. There is no other list with such a title. Not to mention that you are introducing typos because of your willy nilly changes. Mellk (talk) 13:32, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for my original own error.
It's a longtime consensus to name continental European rivers with their name only, since river is not part of river names in most European languages. But if necessary or appropriate you can write river Danube instead of Danube only, but not Danube river or even Danube River. -- ZH8000 (talk) 14:04, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
If no disambiguation is needed for this article, then are we better off with list of cities and towns on the river Danube or list of cities and towns on the Danube? Mellk (talk) 14:13, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I agree. ;-) -- ZH8000 (talk) 14:31, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sámi name

[edit]

Hey, First time visiting here behind the scenes so sorry if I'm breaking etiquette or otherwise confused, but the article states boldly in the etymology section that "Its Sámi name Deatnu means "Great River"." Which caught my attention, since Deatnu is the Northern Sámi word for river Tana (in Norway/Finland). I did some scrounging elsewhere on the internet and couldn't connect that name to the Danube in any way. I am not a Sámi speaker myself so I have limited ways of confirming the truth of the matter but it seems like an error to me? ~2026-22331-3 (talk) 15:25, 11 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Celtic Etymology and Cognates

[edit]

1) Danube comes from Proto-Celtic *Dānowyos, not 'Danu'.

2) It is very contested whether the Irish goddess Danu & Welsh goddess Dôn are derived from the same root as *Dānowyos, that is largely an outdated view. Irish Danu/Danann is especially contested on whether it was an actual distinct goddess, an alteration of Ana/Anu/Anann, a confusion of na trí dée dána with Ana, if 'Danann' meant "gift" in 'tuatha de danann' and was conflated with Anann, if 'Danann' was just 'Anann' with d-prosthesis, or something else. For Welsh Dôn, the Proto-Celtic root *Dān- would have yielded *Dawn in Welsh, not Dôn.The current thought (see John Koch) is that Welsh Dôn is derived from a derivative of Proto-Celtic *gdū "earth" (as *gdon- + suffix). For reference, Proto-Celtic *gdonyos "person, earthling" yielded 'dyn' in Welsh. ~2026-40128-34 (talk) 04:52, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Also, after checking the section again, the only source given for that info is the medieval Welsh Triads. That's not a valid source for the etymology of 'Danube'. ~2026-40128-34 (talk) 15:19, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
