This was an early computer. And, if I recall correctly, their rivals had sabotaged it, which would have meant big trouble for whatever project the Professor really was using it for, had the problem (involving a wire disconnected from a thermostat) not been solved in time. My recollections are a bit different than the plot summary, and I'm not sure where my copy is, so I'm wondering if someone else might be able to clear this up.
