GO Danforth Station Construction

Barukba (talk) 16:39, 7 June 2021 (UTC) The original GTR structure may have been demolished in 1974; however, there was a GO Transit ticket booth on the site as early as 1968. It is the small structure in the background and to the right in this photograph: https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwilson1949/3289428398. (The photo shows the stairs over both tracks that connected the booth to the eastbound platform. What the photo doesn't show is a walkway that connected the booth to the west side of the Main Street bridge.)

The current station building and a portion of the pedestrian tunnel that are there today were built in the late nineties or early two thousands. The pedestrian tunnel was further expanded to go underneath the third track (laid a small time later) and link the station with the housing development that sits on the old railway yard as well as the area that lies north of Gerrard Street East and west of Main Street.

I'm trying to locate more precise dates for these building changes. One clue might be when the TTC removed the two precarious route 506 streetcar stops that were at the very top of the Main Street bridge that serviced the GO station.

"The Danforth GO station will be closed from 5 a.m. Saturday [Sep 17, 2000] until 5 a.m. Monday [Sep 19, 2000] for the construction of a new passenger tunnel to make the station wheelchair accessible by moving the ticket booth to street level and adding elevators. GO Transit has advised passengers to use the Scarborough station at St. Clair Ave. E. and Midland Ave. on the weekend."

"Danforth station is located beside the Main Street bridge over the CN railway tracks in East Toronto. Commuters initially accessed Main Street through the use of a wooden stairway with ticket booths are located near the level of the street. Between 2005 and 2008, GO Transit renovated the station, adding platforms, stairs and elevators and placing the ticket booths at track level. A wheelchair friendly sidewalk now connects the station with Main Street at the north side of the bridge, closer to Danforth Avenue. The stop at the top of the bridge for the 506 CARLTON streetcar line was eliminated along with the stairway. In the 1980s, the province of Ontario briefly considered building a tunnel south from Danforth station to connect with Main Street station, the expense and difficulty of such a connection scrubbed the proposal."

Attempting to determine precisely when the GO ticket booth opened and closed. An article from the Beach Metro Community News suggests GO Transit was using the old GTR station in April 1968, just one month before the Wilson photo linked above on Flickr was taken. (To do: update Wikipedia article to include proposals about connecting Danforth GO with Main Subway Station using a tunnel.)
