Dar Fertit is an Arabic term for the region that spreads from Darfur to Eastern Equatoria. It means country of the Fertit and has its origin in a precolonial nation of that name. Contrary to the article, there is in fact a Fer people, but I doubt they still comprise a plurality of the population traditionally assigned to them. There was once a state by the name of Fertit in Chad, now composed of the prefectures Bamingui-Bangoran, Haute Kotto, Vakaga, I believe.

The Fertit, who were invented for the purposes of Sudanese census, are an amalgam of several, disparate, Central Sudanic speaking peoples whose greater body resides in the neighbouring Central African Republic with smaller minorities in Chad. As the article says, they are non-Arab, non-Nilotic and non-Zande. Lol State in South Sudan broadly corresponds to Southern Dar Ferit of Sudanese reckoning. It is very hilly country, just north of the central African pole of inaccessibility, and is consequently sparsely populated. Northern Dar Fertit is now Dar Fur and is desert.
