Year of first description
[edit]This species has been placed in Category:Plants described in 1836 since the name Cyperus bipartitus was validly published (with a description) in 1836. This is how the category works. However, the article claims that "the taxon known as Cyperus bipartitus was first described [by Pursh] in 1813". The claim is justified, I think, since Pursh was followed by Torrey who described Cyperus diandrus var. castaneus in 1836. (Torrey simultaneously published the names Cyperus diandrus var. castaneus and Cyperus bipartitus in his monograph of 1836.) Torrey's description of the variety is the foundation upon which our understanding of the taxon is based. Since the type specimen of Cyperus bipartitus is not a member of the taxon described by Torrey, the description of Cyperus bipartitus published in 1836 is not relevant. Comments welcome.
