Sus primitivos pobladores fueron los Cuindes y Cundayes de la familia Caribe,etnia pijao, quienes en guerra con los Sutagaos fueron exterminados.Pertenecìa teritorialmente a la provincia de Neiva, canton de Purificacion en sus inicios, hasta 1811 cuando se incorporo a Cundinamarca.
