Can we please change the title of the page back to Cuffy?

[edit]

No one in Guyana calls Cuffy Coffij, and the name Cuffy is on the coins and in the history books. LongLiveGrenada (talk) 02:20, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Correctness of titling the article "Cuffy (slave)?"

[edit]

There is a general movement on the part of historians and history communicators to move away from labelling enslaved persons as "slaves" as their identity. The article currently redirects from "Cuffy (person)." Would it be possible to change the title of the article to "Cuffy (person)" or just "Cuffy" to better align with this tendency and better communicate who this person was?  Preceding unsigned comment added by Quaoarian (talkcontribs) 08:43, 7 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. Multiple proposals, including not moving, moving to Cuffy (rebel leader)/Cuffy (revolutionary), and moving to Cuffy as primary topic. No clear concrete consensus out of any of these. (closed by non-admin page mover) Jeffrey34555 (talk) 17:23, 20 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cuffy (slave)Cuffy (person) – Adding in this section, per the controversial moves protocol. Current history communication steers away from labelling people as "slaves," but rather "enslaved persons," to better reflect their humanity and identity beyond the enslaved state. There is also no other article about a person named "Cuffy," thus no ambiguity would be created by naming this article "Cuffy (person)." The result of the move request was: moved. Given the unanimous support of moving to the primary topic, I feel comfortable moving this as a WP:SNOW move. (closed by non-admin page mover) Jeffrey34555 (talk) 04:31, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cuffy (slave)Cuffy – Per previous discussion and discussion with the user who closed the previous discussion, while there was a lack of consensus on where to move the page, there was a general consensus that the page ought to be moved. Due to the long-term significance of the article, this proposal is to move this article to "Cuffy" and the related disambiguation page to "Cuffy (disambiguation)" Quaoarian (talk) 17:28, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Support: the only other article by the exact name of "Cuffy" is an obscure 80s sitcom. The other articles are naturally disambiguated. ―Howard🌽33 15:42, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Cuffy, Cher, also seems worth considering. The "Cher" is only included for disambiguation purposes, and the opening sentence is "Cuffy (French pronunciation: [kyfi]) is a commune ..." I assume it has long-term significance, but it's a pretty small place with a population of only about 1,000 people. — BarrelProof (talk) 17:19, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
This article seems to get about 80% of traffic to any of them...though numbers are so low i doubt we ca draw conclusions just from that . I'm also still happy with 'revolutionary' or 'rebel leader' as dabs simply because that's what he's known for —blindlynx 17:35, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
