WikiMed Fall 2025 - Edit Plan

Hello, I am a medical student who will be improving and revising the Craniotomy Wikipedia article for a WikiMed course.

I plan on making the following changes:

1. Add an "Indications" section describing and elaborating on common indications for craniotomy
2. Add an "Approaches" section describing and elaborating on common workhorse anatomical approaches for craniotomy, organized into "Supretentorial" and "Infratentorial" approaches, including Pterional, Bifrontal, Temporal, Retrosigmoid, and Suboccipital approaches.
3. Improve the "Complications" section by organizing into Infection, Bleeding, Damage to surrounding structures, Loss of function/neurologic deficit, CSF leak, and Seizure/Meningeal irritation
4. Add up-to-date secondary references (meta-analyses and systematic reviews)

WikiMed Course Peer Review

The recent edits to this page by Ahilvert provide a lot of helpful new information, are balanced and neutral in tone. Key gaps in information have been filled without duplicating information provided elsewhere and the information is well organized, with topics covered in a logical and ordered fashion. I particularly like the bullet pointed lists for indications and approaches, this makes the information easy to read.

I think these edits are particularly helpful to help provide more detail on a very technical topic. In order to make these edits more accessible to a layperson I think simplifying the language where possible would be helpful. Alternatively you could add some definitions (either in text or via links) to help a layperson better understand the text. Example simplifications, could include changing ‘surgical access to the intracranial space’ to ‘surgical access to the space inside the skull’,  ‘neoplastic lesions’ to ‘tumor’, ‘neurovascular structures’ to ‘blood vessels and nerves’ etc. Other plain language terms could be used throughout e.g. ‘utilize’ switch to ‘use’ etc.

The list of approaches seems very complete (although I admit to not knowing what these all are!). I like that they are helpfully split into supratentorial and infratentorial approaches and that there are embedded links to explain these terms. I think it could be helpful to add a picture outlining where the supratentorial vs. infratentorial region is (the supratentorial wiki page already has a nice one). If possible it could also be helpful to add a diagram showing some of the approaches, as a layperson likely won’t understand what all the anatomic landmarks are, but a picture would provide a helpful point of reference, even if it’s just a labeled example of one specific approach. I am also wondering if a reference could be added for each approach, even if it is a review reference that just covers all the approaches.

Now these new sections have been added I think it would be helpful to add a summary sentence covering each section to the lead section to ensure this summarizes all the major points in the article. Lastly I think there is one section on the page where a single research study is described in detail. I think a helpful further edit could be summarizing the key points from this study and removing unnecessary information.

Overall these edits are very helpful and provide much more comprehensive coverage of craniotomy than was available previously. The content is relevant and up to date. The references are also all accurate, are written by a range of authors, and the links to the new references work appropriately. Hazel2128 (talk) 18:56, 14 November 2025 (UTC)

I have simplified the language slightly, added some Wikipedia page citations to assist with technical language, added summarizing sentences to each section, and added an image outlining where the supratentorial vs. infratentorial region is.
