There are a lot of coups missing

[edit]

There are a lot of coups missing just by looking up list of coup we should try to add them. HuntersHistory (talk) 20:02, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have counted add there are about 23 or more missing which I would understand since it is a lot but I weird they would not be on the list like I said I will probably add more later but it would be better if I get List of coups and coup attempts HuntersHistory (talk) 20:18, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Better if I get help. HuntersHistory (talk) 20:18, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Does the undemocratic transfer of power in Chad count as a "coup"?

[edit]

Both the map and the chart count what occurred in Chad in 2021 as a coup. I'm not sure that really counts, however, as it was essentially military leaders deciding to run the country after the death of the leader. While they defied the Chad constitution to do so, I don't see any sources describing what they did as violent or even particularly contested, and the person who should have been the Acting President (Haroun Kabadi) is now the appointed head of a provisional parliament created by the government. While potentially a self-coup, other African countries that have experienced self-coups, most recently Tunisia, are not included within this article. So, I think either some self-coups should be added to the chart/map, or Chad should be removed from the map. Atriskofmistake (talk) 02:54, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Gabon is West Africa?

[edit]

So in the summary of coup d'états that have ever occured in West Africa there is the recent Gabonese coup listed. I wonder if it belongs in this table, since Gabon is rarely if ever classified as being in either West Africa or Sahel region. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gorgedweller (talk • contribs) 08:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Chad after election

[edit]

Chad had an election and the previous head of the junta is now legally head of state through the democratic election process. If the election was truthful or not is not the topic but that it's not under a military government anymore. Does this mean that the Coup Belt is now broken and not a thing anymore? Hey

[edit]

There is an 2025 Mali coup attempt but it does not have a page so can it still be included? 2402:800:6374:DD4A:D1FC:3995:7F0F:FA13 (talk) 05:51, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

2025 Malian protests has a small section about the attempt coup de etat. The Blue Rider 17:29, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Can we still include that though? 2402:800:6374:DD4A:507:BFC4:9F94:E19F (talk) 01:32, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

update map

[edit]

As I'm sure many of you are aware, Madagascar recently had a successful coup against president Andry Rajoelina however the map use dose not include Madagascar and arbitrarily ends in 2023 (possibly because before this the 2023 Nigerien coup was the last successful coup in Africa) but now that there has been another the map need to be updated to include Madagascar and the map needs to change the end year to 2025. I know Madagascar isn't part of the traditional Coup Belt but the map states that it tracks all successful coups in Africa not just those in the coup belt and one could argue the Gabon (which is included on the map) is not part of the coup belt. PharaohCrab (talk) 17:32, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • @PharaohCrab: I strongly oppose this: the term coup belt refers to the geographical region which with an usually high prevalence of coups. Otherwise the article should be called Coup d'état's in Africa. There no WP:RS's calling Madagascar part of the coup belt, and the previous coup was in 2009, which, considering countries like Mali had several over the last few years, isn't exactly a lot by African standards. Abcmaxx (talk) 12:06, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am not suggesting that Madagascar should be considered part of the coup belt, I am only suggesting that it be included on the map which it now has been for a month because the description of that map clearly states that it includes all coups in Africa not just in the coup belt PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 12:30, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I would like to clarify that I don't think Madagascar should be considered part of the coup belt, nor do I think Gabon should be included as the 2023 coup was the first successful coup in Gabonese history PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 12:39, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@PharaohCrab: I agree but this article is an article about the coup belt and not recent coups in Africa, so unless we have sources stating so then everything including the map should be only about the coup belt. The map is called "Coup Belt" anyway so unsure why it should include anything else, same for the other maps actually, could do with some adjustments to fit the article. Abcmaxx (talk) 12:59, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I would opt for removing Gabon and Madagascar from the map(s) and article as they do mot fit the definition. Abcmaxx (talk) 13:01, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The source sees Madagascar as part of the coup belt: https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/guinea-bissau-marks-coup-africa-military-takeovers-127924552
Wouldn't remove Gabon either, it's considered also as part of the coup belt. MarketFruit (talk) 15:34, 7 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@MarketFruit: no it doesn't at all though? The term "coup belt" does not even get a mention and the article is about Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar gets a brief mention only. Abcmaxx (talk) 10:25, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
"Guinea-Bissau has joined a growing list of African countries where military officers have seized power since 2020." This refers to the coup belt. MarketFruit (talk) 11:01, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not necessarily, unlike what the map description would suggest, the coup belt is not just defined by countries in Africa that have had a coup scene 2020 which is why I now agree with Abcmaxx above in changing the map description and map itself to only include countries that have explicitly been called part of the coup belt and if that leaves out Madagascar, Gabon or even Guinea-Bissau so be it. PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 12:37, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I understand your point, however I think it should be added that it's noted that Gabon, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau are part of the coup-belt by some. MarketFruit (talk) 16:12, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
This source does not mention the Coup Belt, and the article as a whole is becoming WP:OR that ties all African coups in the 2020s together, even if unrelated. The article/map needs to be entirely redone to only list countries that reliable sources specifically tie to the Coup Belt. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Thanks ♥) 19:22, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have made substantial changes to the article, only retaining countries that have been called "Coup Belt" by reliable sources. I do not have overwrite permissions, but please remove Madagascar from the map. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Thanks ♥) 16:09, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will remove Madagascar as soon as I can but due to technical limitations I prefer not to disclose it will take until around 4:00 EST before I can start but once I do it should be done quick PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 16:35, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Get rid of Gabon

[edit]

Just because Gabon happened to have a coup around the time this term started seeing use does not mean we need to have it. Gabon has only seen two coups in its entire history and has otherwise been entirely stable; it's not suffering from the same Islamic insurgency as the rest of the countries; and it's not even attached to the Belt! Are there really sources that include Gabon in this? Bluevestman (talk) 20:43, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I do agree that it doesn't fit the definition very well but for some reason it is often included in other sources so it should also be included here PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 22:15, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Are there sources that include Gabon? I would really like to see them. Bluevestman (talk) 22:41, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what the source is but @Nice4What recently did a thorough rewrite of this page and made sure to only include countries typically considered part of the coup belt and they did not remove Gabon so they should be the one to ask. PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 00:17, 31 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Bluevestman: Yes, if you scroll down in the article to the section "List of coup belt countries", there are two sources provided that include Gabon in the Coup Belt: a France 24 story and an article published in the journal Civil Wars.
