[edit]I made some quick edits, tightening up the exposition and removing a content error -- although User: Topology Expert now recognizes that compact does not imply sequentially compact, he has yet to go back and fix all (or any) of the pages in which he asserted this.
The article still lacks any history or motivation: why is the concept of countable compactness useful? Plclark (talk) 17:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Plclark
- Historically, countable compactness had been introduced before compactness. The shift towards full compactness probably occurred only with Alexandroff and Urisohn 1929 paper. The notion is useful since, to say the least, for metric spaces it is equivalent to sequential compactness and so on.
