Cottars and crofters

[edit]

"A cotter, or cottar, is a peasant farmer formerly in the Scottish Highlands" does not quite fit with the reference to Domesday, which did not include the Highlands of Scotland. And Highland cottars are associated with crofting. Is the word cotter perhaps related to cottage? Laurel Bush 28 June 2005 16:13 (UTC).
