An open message to the entire world: please stop using "mains" as a term referring to any building supplied power source. To put it bluntly, the "mains" exist in exactly one point or area in an electrical system in the rest of the world, and tend to refer to the point where a main disconnecting means is located. this means it is also stupid
To put it another way, it is ridiculous in some circumstances to consider plugging a tool into the "mains" as this would imply to many readers the tapping of hundreds or thousands of amps of current. Also, the term is devoid of any meaningful definition of what the "mains" are. Are they 120/240? 120/240 high leg? 120/208? 480/277 Wye? 480 Delta? "Mains" is a meaningless and ridiculous designation that should be abandoned as far as Wikipedia is concerned, and ought to be scoured from the databases.
As a sidenote, this abhorrence for the term "mains" stems from the fact that "real" electricians spend considerable time in their careers determining exactly where "main" (or, if you prefer, utility or common power) begins and ends, and to throw out a blanket term is nothing less thann an open attack on pedantry.
