It'd be nice to verify the currency for the indemnity specified in the treaty. It's possible that it was in dollars, but pounds seems more likely. However, none of the sources I've been able to find on the net even mention it. —db48x | Talk01:59, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
It meant silver dollars, not US dollars nor pounds. China used silver as legal tender and didn't accept foreign currency as legal tender at the time and had no foreign reserve to speak of. Gold and silver coins were widely used for trading. Spanish dollar was the most popular silver dollar in China during that time. --Happyseeu (talk) 22:35, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
